Balanced Bull Dogs beat Shelbyville 61-45 in girls basketball sectional first round

                COLUMBUS, Ind. – Sophomore Alexa McKinley scored 18 points to pace four players in double figures Tuesday evening (Jan. 29), helping the Columbus North girls basketball team to a 61-45 victory over Shelbyville in the first round of the Columbus East Sectional.

                Sophomore Madison White came off the bench to contribute 15 points for the Bull Dogs, who improved to 17-7 for the season and qualified for a semifinal game at 7:30 p.m. Friday (Feb. 1) against host Columbus East (10-12).

                Junior Annie Anderson provided 12 points, and junior Sierra Norman had 10 points. Junior Tessa Lomax and freshman Kylah Lawson each netted three points.

                Senior Ryan Massey and freshman Jaidyn Tackett each scored 10 points to pace Shelbyville (4-20). Senior Olivia Knarr tallied eight points, while junior Makayla Terrell and sophomore Megan Eads each had six points. Senior Carris Decatur notched five points.

                McKInley scored eight points while White and Norman each had three points as Columbus North took a 21-10 lead in the first quarter. White and Norman each tallied five points in the second quarter as the Bull Dogs led 36-26 at intermission.

                White and Anderson each scored five points in the third quarter as CN maintained a 10-point edge at 49-39 at the third stop. McKinley scored eight points while Anderson and Lomax each had two points in the final period as the Bull Dogs closed out the decision.

                East Central defeated Bloomington North 54-27 in the opening game. The Trojans (18-6) will face Bloomington South (19-3) in the 6 p.m. semifinal game on Friday.

                Bloomington North ended its season 6-17.

                Columbus East is the defending sectional champion.
