Barker named IBCA first-team Academic All-State; three other Bull Dog boys, four CNHS girls receive honorable mention accolades

Columbus North senior Blake Barker has been recognized first-team Academic All-State by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association, it was announced Wednesday (March 17).

In addition, seven other Bull Dogs – three additional boys plus four girls – were selected IBCA honorable mention Academic All-State.

Joining Barker on the recognition list are Reese Harmon, Jakub Trusina and Max Wilson from the boys’ team as well as Emily Herndon, Kanon Matsuno, Alexa McKinley and Madison White from the girls’ team.

All the players are seniors, and the IBCA awards its Academic All-State accolades only to seniors. The IBCA considers academic prowess and athletic prowess in consideration of its selections. Items such as grade-point average (3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale) and class rank (top 25 percent of one’s class) were considered in the academic portion, and items such as points per game, rebounds per game and assists per game were considered in the athletic portion.

Typically, the IBCA also considers college board scores as part of its deliberations. However this year, because of COVID-19, some students not taking the SAT or ACT and some colleges not requiring those tests, the IBCA waived that portion of its usual requirements. In the past, a student needed a score of 1,100 or better on math and reading sections of the SAT or a composite score of 24 or better on the ACT to qualify.

IBCA-member coaches from across the state may nominate their seniors who meet the base criteria. Once nominations are received, an IBCA committee reviews the information and determines awards for first team and honorable mention. In total, 37 boys and 33 girls were selected IBCA first-team Academic All-State for 2021. In addition, 262 boys and 267 girls were named IBCA honorable mention Academic All-State for 2021.

The IBCA has selected an Academic All-State team for boys since 1973. The program was expanded to include a girls’ Academic All-State team in 1980.

The four Columbus North girls’ basketball seniors previously were recognized as Academic All-State in a separate program overseen by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association. Herndon, Matsuno, McKinley and White all were selected ICGSA first-team Academic All-State.
