Burton, Redding named AP Class 6A first-team all-state in football; four other Bull Dogs cited as honorable mention all-state

Columbus North seniors Mitchell Burton and David Redding were named first-team Class 6A all-state in football by The Associated Press.

Burton, a 6-3, 190-pound running back, rushed for 1,698 yards and 22 touchdowns to pace the Bull Dogs as they posted a 9-2 record in 2016. The yardage total was fourth in CNHS single-season history and his 25 overall TDs, including two on receptions and one on a return, was a CN single-season record.

Burton’s career rushing total of 3,992 is the second best in school annals, behind only 4,233 by Alex Turner in 2005-07. Burton’s 55 career touchdowns are a school record. Burton has committed to Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

Redding, a 6-5, 285-pound offensive tackle, was the top blocker for a CN squad that set a season school record for points per game (41.2) and was fourth best in season annals for total offense per game (357.5). He recently changed his college commitment to Miami University.

The senior standouts were two of six Bull Dogs recognized by the AP for 6A all-state accolades. They were joined by senior defensive lineman Coleman Tennyson, junior defensive back J.D. Harris, senior defensive back Harley Huser and senior kicker Mark Salle-Tabor, who all were recognized as honorable mention all-state.

Tennyson, a 6-2, 290-pound defensive tackle, produced 75 tackles on the front line, including 15 tackles for loss. He also had two sacks, six QB hurries, two forced fumbles and one blocked kick. Tennyson moved his career TFL count to 24, second on the school’s all-time list, behind only the 27 by Christian McDonald in 2003-04.

Harris, a 5-11, 165-pound cornerback, totaled 28 tackles with three TFLs, five interceptions, eight PBUs and a blocked kick. He also caught eight passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns as well as producing a 15.3-yard average on six punt returns.

Huser, a 6-0, 170-pound safety, totaled 91 tackles with five tackles for loss, four interceptions, four passes broken up, one fumble recovery and one blocked kick. As a receiver, Huser had 11 receptions for 172 yards and a touchdown. In addition, he posted a school-record 20.6 average on 19 punt returns, including three touchdowns, and a 24.1 average on nine kick returns. One of his punt returns was a school-record 87-yard TD.

The 5-10, 160-pound Salle-Tabor was a standout kicker and punter, converting 52-of-56 extra points and 7-of-11 field goals while producing 25 touchbacks on 74 kickoffs. He also averaged 37.7 yards with nine inside the 20-yard line on 22 punts. Over two seasons, Salle-Tabor made 17 field goals, including matching a school-record 10 field goals in 2015.
