GREENWOOD, Ind. – Junior Trenton Kelley threw for three touchdowns and senior Cortez Bandy ran for two others Friday night (Aug. 11), leading the Columbus North football team in a scrimmage against Greenwood on the Woodmen’s field.
Although no official score was kept, the Bull Dogs crossed the Greenwood goal line eight times – five on runs and three on passes – in the five-segment scrimmage that included three periods with varsity players and two periods with reserve players.
The host Woodmen scored only on a 2-yard run by junior Nick Willham in the second segment.
For the entire scrimmage, about one-third of which was played in the rain, Columbus North totaled 300 yards on 50 plays – 154 yards on 24 running plays and 138 yards on 16-of-26 passing. Greenwood countered with 77 yards of offense – 64 yards on 40 running plays and 13 yards passing on 2-of-9 accuracy.
Individually, Kelley connected on 15-of-23 passes for 138 yards, including touchdowns of 10 yards to senior Jaylen Flemmons, 10 yards to senior Tristan Bailey and 24 yards to junior D’Andre Scruggs. Bailey and Scruggs each finished with five receptions for 52 yards, while Flemmons had three catches for 27 yards.
Bandy, meanwhile, rushed 11 times for 24 yards, including TDs that covered 10 yards and 7 yards. In addition, sophomore quarterback Hunter Huser ran three times for 42 yards and sophomores Ethan Rogers and Daveed Jolley each carried three times for 35 yards and one touchdown apiece. Also, junior Michael Johnson ran three times for 18 yards and a score.
The Bull Dogs’ defense also came up with three takeaways. They included a pair of fumble recoveries and an interception by senior Tanner Tran. Senior J.D. Harris had an interception negated by a penalty.
Columbus North had no turnovers.
Senior Brandon Rosado paced Greenwood with 52 yards on nine rushes. Willham added 23 yards on five carries, while senior Seth Gallman was 2-of-7 passing for 13 yards. Senior Conner Battinau had both receptions for the Woodmen.
Neither team scored in the opening 18-play segment where each team started from their own 35, but Columbus North found the end zone four times to Greenwood’s once in 10 plays apiece with series beginning at first-and-goal from the 10.
Kelley hit Flemmons on a 10-yard score before Bandy followed with 10- and 7-yard runs. Kelley then connected with Bailey for a 10-yard score, and Greenwood countered with Willham’s 2-yard run.
Kelley and Scruggs teamed for a 24-yard touchdown in the 12-play third segment that began on the opponent’s 35, then Johnson scored on a 5-yard run in an eight-play segment that began on the CN 35. Rogers burst to the end zone from 24 yards and Jolley scored from the 6 in the final eight-play segment that began on the Greenwood 35.
Columbus North opens its season at 7 p.m. next Friday (Aug. 18) when it visits Franklin. Greenwood begins its regular season at 7 p.m. next Friday when it travels to Perry Meridian for the inaugural game on the Falcons’ new field on the PM school grounds.
