FRANKLIN, Ind. – Junior quarterback Trenton Kelley threw for 202 yards and three touchdowns Friday night (Aug. 18), keying the Columbus North football team to a 41-0 season-opening victory at Franklin.
Senior tailback Cortez Bandy contributed 125 yards rushing and two touchdowns, while junior D’Andre Scruggs had 104 yards receiving and two scores as the Bull Dogs knocked off the Grizzly Cubs for the third consecutive year in their season debut.
The CN defense also contributed to the effort, claiming a pair of takeaways – senior Noah Earl scooped up a fumble and returned it 33 yards and junior Tayran Wells made a diving interception – en route to the shutout. The Bull Dogs most recent previous whitewashes came in back-to-back weeks last season, 40-0 against Franklin Central and 54-0 against Terre Haute South.
For the game, Columbus North amassed 372 total yards with 170 on the ground and 202 through the air. Franklin countered with 179 yards on 116 rushing and 63 passing.
Individually, Kelley was 15-of-24 with one interception passing. He also ran for 13 yards, including a 1-yard touchdown. Bandy ran 23 times for his 125 and had two long runs, including an apparent 82-yard score, negated by penalty. Scruggs caught five passes for 104 yards, while senior Tristan Bailey had receptions for 40 yards and senior Jaylen Flemmons had three catches for 38 yards.
Senior Tyler Fromer led Franklin with 77 yards rushing on 21 carries. Sophomore Drew Byerly was 7-of-16 passing for 63 yards and one interception. Byerly also ran 14 times for 32 yards.
Bandy gave Columbus North a 6-0 lead on its first possession, running 6 yards for a touchdown with 8:30 to go in the first quarter. After a Franklin three-and-out followed by a shanked punt, Kelley connected with Scruggs for a 32-yard touchdown with 6:42 left in the period. On CN’s next possession, Kelley again hit Scruggs for a score, this one covering 23 yards.
The Bull Dogs extended their lead to begin the third quarter, Bandy scoring on a 10-yard burst on the first possession of the half. Not long after, Earl picked up a loose ball on the Franklin 49 and returned it 33 yards to the 16. Four plays later, Kelley sneaked into the end zone from the 1.
Franklin followed with another three-and-out and short punt, giving CN the ball on the Cubs’ 30. Four plays later, Kelley moved to his left to avoid the rush, then flipped a 19-yard TD pass to Bailey.
The hosts moved to the Bull Dogs’ 12 midway through the final period, but senior Cortez Villa tackled Fromer for a 10-yard loss on third down and Wells stopped Byerly short of a first down on fourth down to preserve the shutout.
Columbus North returns to action at 7 p.m. next Friday (Aug. 25) when it visits rival Columbus East at Stafford Field. Franklin travels to Shelbyville at 7 p.m. next Friday.
