Passing game, key pick and blocked punt lift Columbus North to 34-17 victory over Columbus East

COLUMBUS, Ind. – Junior Trenton Kelley and senior Jaylen Flemmons posted top-five single-game efforts, senior J.D. Harris made a momentum-swinging interception and senior Brigham Kleinhenz blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown Friday night (Aug. 25) to lead the Columbus North to a 34-17 victory over rival Columbus East at Stafford Field.

Kelley passed for 304 yards and three touchdowns while Flemmons caught 10 passes for 177 yards and two scores as the Bull Dogs beat the Olympians for the second consecutive season and cut East’s lead in the cross-town series to 24-23.

Kelley’s passing yardage was the second-best in CN annals, behind only a 389-yard game by Ryan Genth in 1989. Kelley’s 20-of-32 accuracy tied for fourth best on the school chart for single-game for completions, while Flemmons’ effort was the Bull Dogs’ fourth-best single game for receiving yards. The completion record is 26 by Eric Roberts in a 1983 game, while the receiving yardage best is 210 yards by Nathan Frasier in a 1999 contest.

As fabulous as the Columbus North passing game was, the Bull Dogs’ defense came up big when it was needed.

With Columbus East facing a fourth-and-3 from the CN 9 and moving for a potential go-ahead score late in the third quarter, Harris intercepted Olympians senior Josh Major in the end zone to squelch the drive. The Bull Dogs followed with an 80-yard scoring drive, Kelley and Flemmons capping the march with a 33-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Later in the fourth quarter, after Kelley lost a fumble at the Olympians’ 30 and the hosts had moved to the Bull Dogs’ 42, Kleinhenz first produced a third-down tackle for loss. Then with East forced to punt from the North 46, Kleinhenz blocked Major’s punt, picked up the loose ball at the Olympians’ 36 and dashed to the end zone for a clinching touchdown.

For the game, Columbus East outgained the Bull Dogs 384-369 while both teams amassed 17 first downs.

Senior Cortez Bandy paced CN with 40 yards rushing, while classmate Tristan Bailey had four catches for 78 yards and a TD and junior D’Andre Scruggs hauled in four passes for 40 yards.

Senior Jamon Hogan led the Olympians’ attack by running for 167 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries. Major added 95 yards and a TD on 15 runs, and he also completed 5-of-7 passes for 55 yards. Sophomore Dalton Back made two receptions for 37 yards.

Columbus North got on the scoreboard first when senior Drew Wilson centered a 30-yard field goal with 6:53 to go in the first quarter. East went ahead late in the period when broke free for a 41-yard touchdown run. Wilson converted a 26-yard field goal early in the second quarter, but East junior Sam Thomasson countered with a 30-yard field goal with 6:34 left in the half.

The Bull Dogs went up 13-10 at intermission when Kelley hit Bailey with a 38-yard scoring strike with 1:43 to go in the second quarter, but the Olympians regained the lead when Hogan ran for a 15-yard touchdown on the first possession of the second half.

CN answered immediately, however. Kelley hit Bailey for a 24-yard gain, then followed by passing to Flemmons for 39 yards to the East 2. One play later, Kelley threw a fade that Flemmons caught in the right corner of the end zone.

A Hogan 41-yard run had East in the red zone, but Harris ended the threat with when he intercepted Major. The Kelley-to-Flemmons 33-yard TD gave the Bull Dogs a 27-17 lead, then Kleinhenz’s blocked punt return sealed the outcome with 4:00 remaining.

Columbus North (2-0) returns to action at 7 p.m. next Friday (Sept. 1) when it hosts Bloomington North (1-1) in its first Conference Indiana game of the season. The game will be Senior Night and Youth Football Night. Columbus East (1-1) is back on the field when it visits Seymour (1-1) at 7 p.m. next Friday in its Hoosier Hills Conference opener.
