COLUMBUS, Ind. – Senior Cortez Bandy scored five touchdowns Friday night (Sept. 29) to help Columbus North to a 55-7 triumph over Perry Meridian and give coach Tim Bless the school record for victories as a football coach.
The passing combination of junior Trenton Kelley and senior Jaylen Flemmons also put up big numbers while junior Jalen Paswater added a defensive TD as Bless saw his career mark at Columbus North move to 119-80 in 17-plus seasons with the Bull Dogs. That surpassed the win total of field namesake Max Andress, who was 118-79-10 in 21 seasons with Columbus High.
Bandy had a career game by running for four touchdowns and adding one more score on a 25-yard reception, while Kelley completed 9-of-15 passes for 270 yards and three TDs. Two of those went to Flemmons, who totaled five receptions for 186 yards.
Bandy’s five touchdowns was one shy of the school record of six in a game set by Lucas Surface in 2003, while Flemmons’ receiving yards was the fourth best in a single game by a CN receiver. And Kelley’s passing yardage was the seventh best in a CN single game.
For the game, the Bull Dogs outgained the Falcons 432-187 while moving to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in Conference Indiana contests. Perry Meridian dropped to 0-7 and 0-5.
Columbus North jumped to a 28-0 advantage in the first quarter, Bandy running in from 1 yard, Kelley connecting with Flemmons on a 63-yard touchdown, Flemmons hitting Bandy for a 25-yard score and Kelley passing to Flemmons from 35 yards out.
Bandy pushed the CN edge to 35-0 early in the second period with a 17-yard touchdown. Shortly thereafter, Paswater picked off a Brooks Davis pass at his own 27 and dashed 73 yards for a touchdown.
CN senior J.D. Harris intercepted Davis again on Perry Meridian’s next possession, returning the ball 41 yards to the Falcons’ 15. Two plays later, Bandy scored from the 4.
Perry Meridian found the scoreboard early in the third quarter when senior Jalen Lee intercepted Kelley at the CN 28 and ran untouched into the end zone. But the Bull Dogs countered on their next possession, Kelley hitting Flemmons for a 44-yard gain and Bandy finishing the drive with a 1-yard touchdown.
Senior Damon Hunter Jr. provided three tackles for loss and sophomore Montez Mitchell had one TFL to add to CN’s defensive highlights.
Columbus North returns to action at about 8 p.m. next Friday (Oct. 6) when it faces Bloomington South (3-4, 2-3) in Lucas Oil Stadium. Perry Meridian is back to the field at 7:30 p.m. next Friday when it hosts Terre Haute North (4-3, 2-3). Both are Conference Indiana games.
