Columbus North beats Southport 28-14 in football, clinches second place in Conference Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS – Seniors Cortez Bandy and Tristan Bailey each scored a pair of touchdowns Friday night (Oct. 13) to lead the Columbus North football team to a 28-14 victory at Southport to clinch second place in Conference Indiana.

Junior Trenton Kelley threw for a pair of TDs and the CN defense made a pair of big plays as the Bull Dogs improved to 8-1 overall and completed league play at 6-1.

Southport junior Eddie Schott matched Kelley with two TD passes, the latter of which pulled the Cardinals to with 21-14 near the midpoint of the fourth quarter. But Columbus North responded with a 10-play drive – capped by Bandy’s 18-yard touchdown burst – that covered 5 minutes, 16 seconds to effectively clinch the result.

If there was any doubt, Schott was strip-sacked on the next play from scrimmage, CN senior Cortez Villa picking up the loose ball and returning it to the Southport 23. The Bull Dogs then ran two plays before kneeling twice to end the game.

For the game, Columbus North outgained the hosts 334-217. Kelley completed 17-of-28 passes for 216 yards and also ran for 51 yards on eight carries. Bandy ran 21 times for 67 yards and TDs of 8 and 18 yards. Senior Jaylen Flemmons caught six passes for 78 yards, while Bailey had four receptions for 73 yards and scores that covered 38 and 4 yards.

Schott was 16-of-23 passing for 174 yards for Southport (5-4, 5-2), including touchdowns of 1 yard to sophomore Ryan Lezon and 3 yards to sophomore Matt Munoz. Junior Jalen Caldwell led the Cardinals on the ground with 52 yards on 15 carries.

The Bull Dogs’ defense also came up with several good plays. Senior Damon Hunter Jr. intercepted Schott at the CN 6 to stop one threat, while senior Nick Tungett recorded two sacks and senior Logan Abbott notched another sack. Senior Noah Earl posted a tackle for loss, and senior Brigham Kleinhenz broke up one pass.

Columbus North took a 14-0 at intermission when Bandy ran 8 yards for one score and Kelley hit Bailey on a 38-yard streak for another in the latter portion of the second quarter.

The Bull Dogs made it 21-0 on the first possession of the third quarter, Kelley connecting with Bailey on a 4-yard slant to complete an eight-play, 67-yard march.

The Cardinals got onto the scoreboard when they finished an eight-play, 78-yard drive when Lezon took a shovel pass from Schott and found the end zone from the 1.

After a CN three-and-out, Southport struck again – Munoz making a one-handed grab near the back of the end zone for a 3-yard TD to finish an 11-play, 64-yard drive.

The Bull Dogs responded to the threat, ultimately moving 81 yards after a holding call on their first play from scrimmage on the ensuing drive. But a 20-yard pass to senior J.D. Harris, a Kelley 12-yard scramble and a Kelley 7-yard run on a fourth-and-4 situation set the stage for Bandy’s concluding score.

Columbus North returns to action at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27 when it hosts Jeffersonville (3-6) in the first round of Class 6A Sectional 8. Southport also next plays at 7 p.m. Oct. 27 when it hosts Avon (7-2) in Class 6A Sectional 7.
