Kelley, Smith take part in college-bound student-athlete ceremony for football

Two Columbus North High School seniors took part in a college-bound student-athlete ceremony on Wednesday (Feb. 6) to finalize their commitments for college athletics and academics.

The athletes in the ceremony were football players Trenton Kelley and Nicholas Smith. The ceremony was held in the Columbus North Athletic Conference Room.

This was the second signing ceremony for the 2018-19 school year for athletes in the Class of 2019.

Kelley, a quarterback, is headed to Morehead State University in Kentucky. Smith, an offensive lineman, is bound for the University of Rochester in New York.

The 6-5, 205-pound Kelley passed for 1,772 yards and 16 touchdowns on 145-of-230 accuracy in leading the Bull Dogs to an 8-2 season last fall that included a Conference Indiana championship at 5-0. He threw for 358 yards against Bloomington South, the second-best game in CN annals, and moved his career yardage to 4,017, the third-best total in CN history. Kelley also ran for 133 yards and three touchdowns as a senior.

Kelley joins an Eagles’ program that went 3-8 overall and 2-6 in the Pioneer Football League in 2018. Earlier, Kelley was voted team MVP, first-team all-Conference Indiana, Associated Press Class 6A honorable mention all-state and all-Region 10 by the Indiana Football Coaches Association.

Smith, a 6-2, 255-pound lineman, was a blocker for a Bull Dogs’ offense that totaled 358.3 yards per game and 32.0 points per game in 2018. Smith joins a Rochester program that went 1-9 overall and 0-5 in the University Athletic Association last fall.

At Rochester, Smith will join his brother, Stephon Peters-Smith, who is a member of the Yellowjackets’ basketball program. Stephon, a 2017 graduate of Columbus North, is averaging 1.6 points and 1.5 rebounds as a sophomore for a Rochester squad that is 16-4 overall and 6-3 in the UAA in 2018-19.

Two Columbus North seniors took part in a college-bound ceremony in November. Columbus North plans at least one and possibly two more signing ceremonies later this school year. One will be in April. A possible second one will be in May.
