Columbus North outscores Greenwood 36-6 in football scrimmage

GREENWOOD, Ind. – Junior Blake Huffman ran for two touchdowns and senior Hunter Huser accounted for two others on Friday evening (Aug. 16), leading the Columbus North football team in a scrimmage against Greenwood on the Woodmen’s field.

Although no official score was kept, the Bull Dogs crossed the Greenwood goal line six times – three on runs and three on passes – in the five-segment scrimmage that included three periods with varsity players and two periods with reserve players.

The host Woodmen scored only on a 1-yard pass from senior Oliver Rau to junior Tanner Allen in the second segment.

For the entire scrimmage, Columbus North totaled 301 yards on 50 plays – 143 yards on 32 running plays and 158 yards on 10-of-18 passing. Greenwood countered with 155 yards of offense – 72 yards on 32 running plays and 83 yards passing on 6-of-15 accuracy.

Individually, Huser connected on 6-of-11 passes for 78 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown pass to junior Charlie Winick on the final play of the second segment. Huser also ran for 43 yards on six carries, including a 1-yard TD sneak in the third segment.

Huffman ran 14 times for 31 yards, including scoring runs that covered 3 yards and 6 yards. His first score came on the Bull Dogs’ opening drive, capping an eight-play, 65-yard march. Huffman’s second score came on the third play of the second segment, a burst around left end on a series that began with a first-and-goal from the Greenwood 10.

Sophomore Keegan Castetter shined in the two JV segments, hauling in four passes for 80 yards, including touchdowns that covered 4 yards and 35 yards on back-to-back throws from sophomore Luke Hammons. Castetter also added an interception on defense, picking off Greenwood freshman Chance Glynn on the last play of the scrimmage.

The Bull Dogs’ defense came up with two takeaways. They included a fumble recovery on the Woodmen’s first play of the fourth segment and Castetter’s pick.

                Columbus North had no turnovers.

Junior Ethan Haessig paced Greenwood with 43 yards on nine rushes. Sophomore Jacob Rollett added 24 yards on eight carries, while Rau netted 12 yards on three rushes.
