Avon defeats Columbus North 48-14 in football season opener

INDIANAPOLIS – Junior Henry Hesson threw for three touchdowns and the Avon defense scored two more on Friday evening (Aug. 23), lifting the Orioles to a 48-14 victory over Columbus North in the second game of the Horseshoe Classic in Lucas Oil Stadium.

Hesson completed 7-of-9 passes for 102 yards, including touchdowns that covered 10 yards to senior Jalen Love, 8 yards to junior Remington Gall and 10 yards to sophomore Joe Hall as Avon built a big lead before allowing the Bull Dogs a pair of second-half touchdowns.

Junior Clayton Peters and junior Austin Mayo each provided defensive scores on long fumble returns, while sophomore Chrishon McCray added a 62-yard touchdown run and junior Nick Bandy converted a pair of field goals.

In addition, junior Antwain Wade intercepted CN senior Hunter Huser twice, senior Joseph Sargent blocked two punts and senior Tyler Anderson produced a 79-yard punt return as well as a 50-yard kick return.

Junior Blake Huffman paced the Columbus North attack, running for 120 yards on 24 carries that included a 52-yard touchdown. Junior Royce Lofton blocked a punt for the Bull Dogs, setting up a 2-yard TD by sophomore Luke Hammons in the fourth quarter.

Anderson returned the opening kick 50 yards, and Hesson connected with Love on a 10-yard TD to give Avon a 7-0 lead on its first possession. The Bull Dogs used a lateral pass from senior Mitchel Collier to Huffman to move into Orioles territory, but Peters picked up a fumble on the 24 and raced 76 yards for a 14-0 lead.

Two plays later, Wade grabbed his first interception and returned the ball to the CN 18. Three plays after that, Hesson hit Gall from the 8 for a 21-0 advantage.

The Bull Dogs produced a pair of first downs on their ensuing possession but ultimately were forced to punt. Junior Carter Ward booted a 40-yarder, but Anderson returned the ball 79 yards to the Columbus North 12. The defense prevented a touchdown, but Bandy converted a 25-yard field goal with 11:10 to go in the half.

Columbus North was forced to punt on its next possession, and Sargent got a hand on the ball and it carried just 19 yards. On the next play from scrimmage, McCray bolted 62 yards for a 31-0 command.

Avon then forced a three-and-out, and Sargent fully blocked this punt try to give his team the ball and the CN 10. One play later, Hesson passed to Hall for a touchdown.

Wade made another interception on the Bull Dogs’ next possession, and Bandy converted the opportunity into a 28-yard field goal with 28 seconds left in the half.

Columbus North moved to the Avon 14 on its first possession of the second half, but Mayo scooped up an errant pitch on the CN 28 and dashed 72 yards for yet another Orioles’ touchdown.

Huffman countered with his 52-yard touchdown on CN’s next possession and, after Avon was forced to punt, Lofton’s block gave the Bull Dogs the ball on the Avon 2. Hammons sneaked into the end zone to account for the game’s final score.

Fishers defeated North Central 26-0 in the opening game of the Horseshoe Classic.

Columbus North returns to action at 7 p.m. next Friday (Aug. 30) when it visits Columbus East at Stafford Field. The game will be part of the Great American Rivalry Series. Avon travels to Ben Davis at 7 p.m. next Friday.
