INDIANAPOLIS – Senior Giovani Alejandro ran for one touchdown, sophomore Luke Hammons passed for another score and the defense pitched a shutout Friday evening (Sept. 13) as the Columbus North football team defeated Roncalli 14-0 at Bob Tully Field.
Alejandro’s scoring run came on a 31-yard misdirection play late in the second quarter, while Hammons connected with junior Eshaan Patel for a 5-yard TD late in the third quarter as the Bull Dogs improved to 2-2 for the season.
The CN defense, meanwhile, put up its first goose egg since blanking Bloomington South 23-0 in the 2017 season. The host Rebels dropped to 0-4.
For the game, Columbus North outgained Roncalli 259-174. The Bull Dogs totaled 198 yards on the ground, junior Royce Lofton leading the effort with 61 yards on six carries and Alejandro adding 51 yards on five attempts. Hammons added 61 yards passing, completing 10-of-18 attempts. Senior Mitchel Collier led the receivers with four catches for 38 yards.
Sophomore Aidan Leffler paced the Rebels’ attack, going 19-of-32 through the air for 137 yards. Sophomore Kyle Lockard totaled seven receptions for 79 yards, while junior Baron Huebler ran 14 times for 43 yards.
Columbus North snapped a scoreless tie when Alejandro ran 31 yards around the left side to cap a nine-play, 58-yard drive with 3:20 left in the half.
Roncalli responded on its next possession, posting their first four first downs of the game and moving 60 yards to set up a 38-yard field goal attempt. However, senior Owen Herndon was wide left and the Bull Dogs took a 7-0 lead into intermission.
Lofton set up CN’s second touchdown with a 41-yard burst over the left side that moved the ball to the Roncalli 8. After Hammons ran for 2 yards and Jolley gained 1 yard, Hammons flipped a 5-yard pass to Patel to complete a seven-play, 64-yard march.
The Rebels moved to the Columbus North 30 on their next possession, but Leffler overthrew senior Chris Parrett on a fourth-and-8 play to end the drive. Roncalli faced a fourth-and-10 from the CN 27 on its next possession, but junior Ryan Henry was stopped 3 yards shy of a first down on Leffler’s fourth-down pass.
That gave the Bull Dogs possession with 7:52 to go in the game, and they sealed the result by chewing up the next 7:01 before finally turning the ball over on downs on the Roncalli 16.
Columbus North returns to action at 7 p.m. next Friday (Sept. 20) when hosts Guerin Catholic (3-1) for Homecoming in a non-conference game. Roncalli is back on the field at 7 p.m. next Friday when it visits Scecina (4-0).
