Guerin Catholic defeats Columbus North 21-7 in football

COLUMBUS, Ind. – Senior Christian Geloy threw for two touchdowns and classmate Gus Baumgartner ran for another score Friday evening (Sept. 20), leading the Class 3A No. 9 Guerin Catholic football team to a 21-7 victory over Columbus North at Max Andress Field.

Senior Mitchel Collier scored the Bull Dogs’ touchdown, hauling in a 15-yard pass from sophomore Luke Hammons with 1:31 to go in the game.

Geloy completed 11-of-18 passes for 156 yards, including TDs that covered 62 yards to senior Patrick Hagel and 25 yards to junior Max McGreal, as the Golden Eagles improved to 4-1. Baumgartner added 83 yards on 27 rushes, including a 37-yard third-quarter TD burst that broke a scoreless deadlock.

Junior Royce Lofton paced the attack for Columbus North (2-3), running 12 times for 56 yards. Junior Blake Huffman added 46 yards on 13 carries, while Hammons completed 4-of-11 passes for 62 yards. Collier had three receptions for 48 yards, and senior Hunter Huser made one catch for 14 yards.

After a scoreless first half where the Bull Dogs squandered an early opportunity after sophomore Dyllan Redmon recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff at the Guerin 17, the Golden Eagles snapped the tie when Baumgartner broke through the line for a long touchdown run on a third-and-3 play with 8:06 remaining in the third quarter.

The visitors added to their lead on their first possession of the fourth quarter, Geloy hitting Hagel along the left sideline for a 62-yard score. On its next possession, Geloy connected with McGreal for a 25-yard touchdown and a 21-0 advantage as the Golden Eagles spoiled CN’s homecoming game.

The Bull Dogs countered with their lone scoring drive, the Hammons-to-Collier pass completing a six-play, 72-yard march.

Columbus North, 0-1 in Conference Indiana, returns to action at 7:30 p.m. next Friday (Sept. 27) when it visits Terre Haute North (2-3, 0-3) in a league contest. Guerin Catholic, 0-1 in the Circle City Conference, is back on the field at 7:30 p.m. next Friday when it hosts Bishop Chatard (4-1, 2-0) in a CCC encounter.
