Bull Dogs knock off Bloomington South 15-9 in football

COLUMBUS, Ind. – Junior Blake Huffman ran for two touchdowns and a two-point conversion Friday night (Oct. 4) to propel the Columbus North football team to a 15-9 victory over Bloomington South at Max Andress Field.

Huffman totaled 80 yards on 20 carries, including TD runs of 10 yards and 2 yards as the host Bull Dogs improved to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in Conference Indiana. Junior Royce Lofton added 48 yards on 12 carries and a key special teams tackle to help set up Huffman’s second scoring run.

Senior Maveric Thiery ran for 79 yards on 14 carries for the Panthers (4-3, 3-2), including a 53-yard touchdown dash on the visitors’ first play from scrimmage.

Other than Thiery’s one long run run and a 42-yard-pass from junior D.J. Bull to junior Maddix Blackwell, which set up a 29-yard field goal by senior Carter Robinson, the Columbus North defense performed admirably the rest of the game.

CN’s punt return unit came up big when Bloomington South faced a fourth-and-3 from the 50 with about five minutes to go in the game. Panthers senior Ethan Hensley was unable to cleanly field a low snap, and a wave of Bull Dogs overwhelmed him, Lofton ultimately taking the punter down at the Bloomington South 33.

Huffman burst around the right side for a 28-yard gain on the next play. Three plays after that, Huffman showed excellent second effort to bull his way into the end zone from 2 yards out. Huffman followed with a two-point conversion run to give the hosts a six-point advantage.

The Bull Dogs’ defense followed by forcing Bull into three consecutive incomplete passes and a Panthers’ punt on fourth-and-10 from their own 19 with about 2:45 remaining. CN then took over at the Bloomington South 49, gaining 5 yards on three plays. Then on fourth-and-5 from the Panthers’ 44, senior Landon Robbins ran 24 yards down the right side on a fake punt to seal the decision.

Thiery opened the scoring with a 53-yard run on Bloomington South’s first offensive play. Robinson’s extra point missed, which allowed Columbus North to take a one-point lead when it responded with a touchdown of its own.

Senior Hunter Huser returned the ensuing kickoff to the 33, and the Bull Dogs proceeded to put together a 12-play, 67-yard drive. All 12 plays were runs, and Huffman capped the march with a 10-yard touchdown. Junior Carter Ward converted the extra point for a 7-6 edge.

Bull connected with Blackwell for the long pass late that moved the ball to the CN 14 late in the second quarter. But the Bull Dogs’ defense stiffened, yielding just 2 more yards and prompting the Panthers to settle for Robinson’s 29-yard field goal.

The score stayed at 9-7 until shortly after Lofton tackled Hensley on the errant punt try. Huffman followed with his longest run of the game, then punched the ball into the end zone for the decisive points.

For the game, Columbus North outgained the visitors 219-195. As a team, the Bull Dogs ran for 188 yards on 54 carries and sophomore Luke Hammons completed 7-of-18 passes for 31 yards. Bloomington South totaled for 69 yards on 25 carries, while Bull threw for 126 yards on 8-of-18 accuracy.

Columbus North returns to action at 7 p.m. next Friday (Oct. 11) when it visits Bloomington North (5-2, 2-1) in another CI game. Bloomington South hosts Edgewood (6-1) in a non-conference game at 7 p.m. next Friday.
