Lozano, Bloomington North top Columbus North 27-7 in football

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Sophomore Reece Lozano threw for 206 yards and two touchdowns on a rainy Friday night (Oct. 11) to lead the Bloomington North football team to a 27-7 victory over visiting Columbus North in a Conference Indiana encounter.

Senior Cade Laughman totaled 135 yards on six receptions, including the TDs that covered 9 and 15 yards, as the host Cougars improved to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in league games while celebrating Senior Night. Bloomington North also took advantage of four takeaways, including two fumbles and an interception deep in CN territory that directly led to 17 points by the home team.

Junior Blake Huffman ran for 66 yards on 23 carries to lead the offense for the Bull Dogs, who fell to 4-4 and 2-2. The best moment for the visitors was a 71-yard return of the opening kickoff by senior Hunter Huser, which set up a 1-yard touchdown by Royce Lofton and an early 7-0 lead.

Columbus North appeared to control much of the first half, but a fumbled punt with just less than four minutes in the half led to a Lozano-to-Laughman 9-yard touchdown that tied the game with 3:10 to go before intermission.

The Bull Dogs responded with one first down and then punted to the Bloomington North 18 with just 56.7 to go, but Bloomington North covered 82 yards on six plays capped by a 2-yard TD run by freshman Cody Mikulich.

The Cougars added a 36-yard field goal by sophomore Kyle Trilling late in the third quarter, then added 10 points in the fourth quarter following a pair of Columbus North turnovers.

First, following a fumble recovery by BN senior Ethan Coy at the CN 16, Lozano hit Laughman with a 15-yard TD slant despite pressure in his face. Not long later, Cougars senior Matt Freel intercepted CN sophomore Luke Hammons at the Bull Dogs’ 27 and returned the ball to the Bull Dogs’ 8. Three plays netted a loss of 1 yard, so Trilling came on and converted a 26-yard field goal.

Hammons was intercepted a second time on CN’s next possession, and the teams each had one more possession to end the game. Hammons finished by completing 6-of-17 passes for 73 yards. Senior Mitchel Collier paced the Bull Dogs’ receivers with four catches for 45 yards.

Lozano finished 17-of-27 passing, while junior Jack Recker had three receptions for 31 yards and junior Bailen Murphy hauled in seven passes for 23 yards. Mikulich totaled 56 yards on 16 carries and added 17 yards on one reception.

Columbus North returns to action at 7:30 p.m. next Friday (Oct. 18) when it hosts Terre Haute South (5-3, 2-2) in its final regular-season game. The winner will be in a three-way tie for second place, and the loser will finish in fifth place. Bloomington North visits Southport (6-2, 3-1) at 7 p.m. next Friday in a game that will determine the 2019 CI champion. The winner will be the outright champion; the loser will be part of the three-way tie for second.
