Alejandro, Bull Dogs knock off Terre Haute South 45-14 on Senior Night

COLUMBUS, Ind. – Senior Giovani Alejandro scored three touchdowns on two runs and a long reception Friday evening (Oct. 18), propelling the Columbus North football team to a 45-14 victory over Terre Haute South on Senior Night at Max Andress Field.

Alejandro ran for 112 yards on 10 carries, including TDs that covered 22 yards and 35 yards, as the Bull Dogs improved to 5-4 overall and completed Conference Indiana tied for second place at 3-2. Alejandro also scored on a 42-yard pass from sophomore Luke Hammons.

Junior Royce Lofton, junior Blake Huffman and senior Daveed Jolley also found the end zone, while junior Carter Ward added a 37-yard field goal as Columbus North outgained the visitors 384-227. Defensive highlights for the Bull Dogs included a Jolley blocked field goal, a 41-yard interception return by senior Nash Johnson, a 10-yard sack by Johnson and a 1-yard sack by Lofton.

The visiting Braves fell to 5-4 overall and placed fifth in the conference at 2-3.

Bloomington North defeated Southport 34-31 in overtime to claim its first CI championship at 4-1. Columbus North, Southport and Bloomington South tied for second at 3-2. Terre Haute South placed fifth, and Terre Haute North finished sixth at 0-5.

Terre Haute South looked like it might score on its first drive after it moved to the CN 13, but the drive stalled on a pair of incomplete passes and Jolley dashed around the right side to block a 30-yard field goal attempt by Braves sophomore Ashton Hayne.

The Bull Dogs then took the lead when Alejandro burst 22 yards around the left side to cap an eight-play, 92-yard drive. Hammons’ passes of 13 yards and 25 yards, both to Alejandro, helped spark the march.

Johnson intercepted THS junior Caleb Stultz on the next THS possession. Johnson grabbed the ball at the Bull Dogs’ 48, then returned it 41 yards to the Braves’ 11. Two plays later, Huffman sprinted around the left side for a 7-yard touchdown.

On CN’s next possession, Jolley finished a seven-play, 56-yard march with a 13-yard touchdown over the left side. Lofton ran for 13 yards and Jolley ran for 11 yards earlier in the drive.

Terre Haute South countered with a Stultz 10-yard TD pass to junior James Mallory to make it 21-7 with 3:47 remaining before intermission, but Columbus North moved quickly down the field and Ward converted a 37-yard field goal as time expired in the half.

Hammons -- who completed 4-of-6 passes for 95 yards -- hit Alejandro circling out of the backfield for a 42-yard touchdown on the Bull Dogs’ first possession of the third quarter. Lofton burst through the middle for a 23-yard TD on CN’s second possession of the quarter. And Alejandro went over the right side, broke a tackle and then sprinted 35 yards to score on the Bull Dogs’ only possession of the fourth quarter.

Stultz connected with senior Owen Findley for a 4-yard touchdown on the game’s final play from scrimmage. Stultz finished 12-of-24 for 158 yards through the air.

Columbus North recognized 20 seniors during a brief ceremony at halftime. Players cited were Alejandro, Johnson, Jolley, Mitchel Collier, Adam Behling, Jackson Davis, Michael Hatton, Lucas Hayes, Nick Holt, Hunter Huser, Dalton Kirk, Jackson Lay, Luke McDonald, Montez Mitchell, David Ocampo, Jackson Payne, Spencer Rivera, Landon Robbins, Alex Russell and Rashan Wells.
