Huffman runs for 185 yards, two touchdowns as Columbus North beats Bloomington South 38-14

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Senior Blake Huffman ran for 185 yards and two touchdowns Friday evening (Oct. 2), keying the Columbus North football team to a 38-14 victory at Bloomington South.

Junior Luke Hammons also accounted for two TDs and junior Dyllan Redmon added another score as the visiting Bull Dogs improved to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in Conference Indiana. In addition, junior Jaxson Scruggs intercepted Panthers senior D.J. Bull twice, and senior Royce Lofton blocked a punt.

Hammons completed 11-of-16 passes for 154 yards, including a 51-yard touchdown pass to senior Hayden McDaniel that came one play after Scruggs’ second interception where he literally ripped the ball away from the Bloomington South receiver as both players were falling to the ground.

Hammons also ran for 75 yards on 11 carries, including a 16-yard TD run. Redmon added 51 yards on seven attempts, including a 1-yard touchdown.

Bull paced the Class 5A No. 16 Panthers (4-3, 3-2), completing 11-of-19 passes for 167 yards. That included a 23-yard TD strike to senior Jalen Peck in the second quarter. Bull also added a 4-yard touchdown run plus a two-point conversion pass to senior Maddix Blackwell in the fourth quarter.

For the game, Columbus North totaled 455 yards of offense while Bloomington South managed just 225 yards.

Senior Carter Ward gave the Bull Dogs an early lead, converting a 38-yard field goal on the game’s first possession. The Panthers looked like they were driving to take the lead, but Scruggs intercepted Bull in the end zone to end the threat.

Columbus North rebounded to extend its lead, a Huffman 68-yard run moving the ball near the South goal line. Three plays later, Huffman scored from the 1 on a direct-snap play.

The hosts countered with a Bull’s 23-yard touchdown pass to Peck and looked to have some momentum when they forced a CN punt. But on South’s first play after the punt, Scruggs intercepted Bull for the second time. One play after that, Hammons hit a McDaniel streaking along the left sideline for a 51-yard touchdown for a 17-6 lead at halftime.

Lofton blocked a punt by South senior Mason David on the first possession of the second half. Four plays later, Hammons produced a nifty 16-yard touchdown run. After the CN defense forced a three-and-out, Redmon capped an eight-play, 57-yard drive with a 1-yard TD run.

The Panthers struck back early in the fourth quarter, Bull 4-yard TD coming just after he hit Blackwell for a 20-yard game on fourth-and-11. But the Bull Dogs ended any doubt when they went 80 yards in two plays – Hammons hitting junior Keegan Castetter for a 46-yard gain and Huffman following with a 34-yard touchdown – with 6:49 remaining.

Bloomington South picked up one first down on its next possession but then had to punt. And CN then moved the ball well enough to run out the final 4:30 of the game.

Columbus North returns to action at 7 p.m. next Friday (Oct. 9) when it hosts 5A No. 13 Bloomington North (3-2, 2-1 entering a game Saturday at Roncalli) in another CI contest. The Bull Dogs follow by traveling to Terre Haute South (2-4, 1-2 entering a game Saturday at Brebeuf Jesuit) on Friday, Oct. 16 to complete their regular season.

Bloomington South hosts Roncalli at 7 p.m. next Friday (Oct. 9).
