Huffman rushes for 151 yards, three TDs as Columbus North beats Terre Haute South 42-21, completes unbeaten conference season

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Senior Blake Huffman ran for 151 yards and three touchdowns on Friday evening (Oct. 16), leading the Columbus North football team to a 42-21 victory over Terre Haute South at Bob Clements Field.

Junior Luke Hammons also accounted for 220 yards and two TDs as the visiting Bull Dogs improved to 6-2 overall and completed Conference Indiana play at 5-0. Junior Dyllan Redman also ran for 69 yards and a score, while senior Hayden McDaniel hauled in a 45-yard touchdown reception.

Senior Caleb Stultz completed 13-of-30 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns for the host Braves, who dropped to 2-7 and 1-4. Senior James Mallory caught both TDs, one covering 35 yards late in the first quarter and another covering 49 yards midway through the third quarter. Senior Jacob Rutledge added the host’s final TD on a 1-yard fourth-quarter run.

For the game, Columbus North totaled 425 yards while Terre Haute South had just 222 yards. Hammons completed 7-of-9 passes for 130 yards, including the long TD to McDaniel. Hammons also contributed 90 yards rushing, including a 13-yard touchdown.

The CN defense limited the Braves to just 50 yards rushing on 20 carries. Senior Royce Lofton also intercepted Stultz on the game’s first possession, setting up the Bull Dogs’ first touchdown, and the CN defense totaled two sacks while repeatedly hurrying Stultz on pass attempts.

Senior Luke Bless totaled seven tackles, one pressure and one pass broken up, while Lofton and junior Conner Essick each provided six tackles, including one tackle for loss, plus a pressure. Senior Jamal King chipped in seven tackles and freshman Andrew Molnar had five tackles. Junior Dawson Adams disrupted with four tackles, including one sack, one TFL and three pressures.

Lofton’s early interception and 29-yard return to the Terre Haute South 33 set up the game’s first score. Five plays later, Redmon punched it into the end zone from 1 yard away.

The Bull Dogs appeared to go up two scores when junior Keegan Castetter returned a punt 83 yards for a touchdown, but the return was negated by a penalty and CN ultimately punted on the possession. Terre Haute South then countered, Stultz hitting Mallory on a fourth-and-15 play for a 35-yard touchdown.

Columbus North responded in a big way, scoring touchdowns on four of its next five possessions. First, Hammons lofted a long ball that found McDaniel in stride for a 45-yard score, then Hammons ran 13 yards for a 21-7 advantage. CN started to move again but lost the ball on a fumble, but the defense quickly got the ball back and the visitors scored twice more for a 35-7 command at intermission.

First, Huffman scored on a 4-yard run shortly after a Hammons-to-Castetter 32-yard gain. Huffman again found the end zone on a 1-yard touchdown just before the half after Hammons had runs of 23 yards and 18 yards to set up the score.

Huffman made it touchdowns on three consecutive possession to start the second half, this time burst over the left side for a 34-yard score. That gave the Bull Dogs a 35-point margin, and the running clock began.

Terre Haute South countered with the second Stultz-to-Mallory touchdown and the Rutledge TD run to account for the final score.

Columbus North completed its second unbeaten conference in three seasons after clinching the league championship last week when it beat Bloomington North 42-14. This is the Bull Dogs’ third crown since CI began football in the fall of 1998. The Bull Dogs shared the title with Lawrence Central in 2004 and previously claimed an outright crown in 2018. Columbus High/Columbus North also won or shared South Central Conference trophies in 1936, 1942, 1945, 1948, 1952, 1959, 1961, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1975 and 1988.

The Bull Dogs return to action at 7 p.m. Oct. 30 when they host top-ranked Center Grove (9-0) in a Class 6A Sectional 8 first-round game.
