Bull Dogs fall to Class 5A top-ranked Cathedral in varsity football

September 18, 2021 - The Columbus North Bull Dog varsity football team fell to 2-3 on the season with a 37-13 loss to the Class 5A top-ranked Cathedral High School on Friday night (September 17).  This was the Bull Dogs’ third opponent who had been ranked number-one in their class in the first five games of the season. Certainly no one can question the strength of schedule faced by head coach Tim Bless and his Bull Dogs.

The Irish jumped out to a 10-0 lead with a touchdown reception and a field goal in the first quarter, but the Bull Dogs fought back early in the second quarter, advancing deep into Cathedral territory.  A pass just off the fingertips of Cooper Horn in the back of the end zone on third down forced a field goal attempt by the Dogs, but the kick was wide right.  Cathedral then took the next snap and busted loose on an 80-yard touchdown run to increase the Irish lead to 17-0.  Another touchdown pass with just over seven minutes left in the quarter increased the Cathedral lead to 24-0, but the Bull Dogs refused to quit.  Luke Hammons found Damon Edwards on a 46-yard touchdown pass after a 48-yard kickoff return by Jaxson Scruggs gave the Bull Dogs good field position, cutting the Irish lead to 24-7 at half time.

Columbus North scored again in the third quarter on a tough 16-yard run by Hammons.  The extra point attempt was no-good, but the Dogs were right back in the game 24-13.  Two second-half field goals and a rushing touchdown by Cathedral with just 59 seconds left in the game sealed the victory for the Irish, 37-13.

The Bull Dogs rushed for 65 yards on 27 carries, and passed for 103 yards on 12-for-22 passing from Hammons.  Dyllan Redmon led the Bull Dog rushing attack with 38 yards on 14 carries.  Horn had 4 receptions for 38 yards, and Edwards’ 46 yards receiving led the Dogs.

Injuries and other personnel factors forced a cancellation of the JV game at Cathedral, but the freshmen squad fell 20-8 on Saturday morning, September 18.

The Bull Dogs will face Conference Indiana foe Terre Haute North on Friday, September 24.  Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 pm.  The JV team will host the Patriots the next morning at 11:00 am.
