Columbus North clips Columbus East 21-12 in JV football; Bull Dog freshmen top Olympians by same score

                COLUMBUS, Ind. – Sophomore Ethan Rogers and junior Michael Johnson combined for 273 yards rushing on Saturday (Aug. 26) to lead the Columbus North JV football team to a 21-12 victory over Columbus East at Max Andress Field.

                Rogers ran for 139 yards on 13 carries, while Johnson amassed 134 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries as the Bull Dogs’ JV improved to 2-0. Sophomore Daveed Jolley added 35 yards on seven attempts, while sophomore Hunter Huser contributed an 18-yard touchdown run. Also, junior Dylan England had a 1-yard TD sneak while going 2-of-6 passing for 20 yards.

                Sophomore Giovani Alejandro made two catches for 19 yards, and junior Jackson Kerber had one reception for 6 yards.

                Defensively, junior safety Riley Ables recovered a fumble, collected a tackle for loss and made an interception deep in CN territory to headline the effort. Jolley and Huser also provided interceptions, while sophomore Jackson Payne produced a sack. Junior Bradley Gutierrez, sophomore Nick Holt, sophomore Dalton Kirk, sophomore Landon Robbins, sophomore Rashan Wells and junior Jacob Sutton also were involved in TFLs.

                East sophomore Cole Gilley paced the visitors, completing 4-of-11 passes for 110 yards.

                In the freshman game, Blake Huffman ran for 96 yards on 18 carries while Preston Terrell, Cody Ruble and Royce Lofton each scored touchdowns as the Bull Dogs (2-0) took an identical 21-12 decision at that level.

                Terrell finished with 54 yards on two carries, including a 48-yard touchdown on an end around in the first quarter. Ruble ran for 14 yards, including a 1-yard TD sneak in the third quarter. Lofton contributed 40 yards on three carries, including a 36-yard scoring dash with 2:07 to go in the final period.

                Ruble also completed 2-of-18 passes for 16 yards. Hayden McDaniel caught one for 18 yards, while Terrell grabbed the other for a 2-yard loss.

                Terrell provided a pair of interceptions on defense and added a key open-field tackle of East QB Malachi Parks late in the game. Lofton added a pair of TFLs, while J.J. Montgomery and Keegan Hill each notched a sack.

                Mark McDonald was the workhorse back for the Olympians, scoring a 4-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. Parks also scored on a 20-yard run for the visitors.

                The Columbus North JV and freshman teams each return to action next Saturday (Sept. 2). The JV visits Bloomington North at 10 a.m., while the freshman host the Cougars at 10 a.m.
