Roncalli clips Columbus North 14-7 in overtime in JV football; Rebels edge Bull Dogs 13-12 in freshman football

INDIANAPOLIS – Sophomore George Marten connected with junior Eli Crouch for a 12-yard touchdown pass in overtime Saturday (Sept. 12), lifting the Roncalli JV football team to a 14-7 victory over visiting Columbus North.

Marten finished with two TD passes, while the Bull Dogs dropped to 2-2 at the JV level.

After a scoreless first half, sophomore Zac Horn gave Columbus North a 7-0 lead in the third quarter with a 1-yard touchdown on a quarterback sneak. The host Rebels countered immediately, Marten hitting junior Will Morse for an 80-yard touchdown on the next play from scrimmage.

The Bull Dogs had a chance to win the game in the fourth quarter with a field-goal attempt with about three minutes left in regulation. But the snap was not clean and Horn, the holder for the kick, was tackled.

Thus, the game went to overtime, and Roncalli converted a fourth-and-goal play from the 12, Marten passing to Crouch. The Bull Dogs were unable to find the end zone, and the Rebels claimed the triumph.

Sophomore Bradley Johnson recovered a fumble, while junior Matthew Hager and junior Bryce Abner each made an interception for the Bull Dogs.

In Columbus, the visiting Rebels used two long touchdowns to pull out a 13-12 decision in the freshman game at Max Andress Field.

The Bull Dogs’ Alex Clark opened the scoring with a 48-yard fumble return in the first quarter, but Roncalli took a 7-6 lead when J.J. Prendergast connected with James Guthrie for a 71-yard touchdown and Levi Wisler converted the extra point.

The Rebels pushed their advantage to 13-6 when Spencer Burge sprinted 88 yards to the end zone in the second quarter.

Hudson Elwood hit Liam Milne for a 34-yard touchdown to cut CN’s deficit to one point, but the Bull Dogs (1-3) were unable to succeed on an attempted two-point conversion. Jason Shuey recovered a Roncalli fumble with 7:06 to go in the third quarter, helping set up the Elwood-to-Milne touchdown.

The Rebels’ Dominic Morelli intercepted an Elwood pass late in the third quarter.

The Columbus North JV and freshman teams return to action in two weeks – on Saturday, Sept. 26 – against Terre Haute North. The JV travels to Terre Haute for an 11 a.m. kickoff. The Bull Dog freshman host the Patriots at 11 a.m. at Max Andress Field.

Both teams are off next Saturday (Sept. 19) when the Columbus North program has a bye in the schedule.
