Columbus North girls tennis goes 2-1 in North Central Invitational, completes regular season at 17-4

                INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Senior Servane Cloteaux and freshman Tiffany Fu were spotless at No. 2 doubles as Columbus North girls tennis came within a third-set tiebreaker from going undefeated for the day, but the Bull Dogs instead finished 2-1 and in second place in the North Central Invitational.

                No. 12 Carroll (Fort Wayne) edged the seventh-ranked Bull Dogs 3-2 in a first-round match and went on to win the four-team, round-robin competition with a 3-0 mark for the day. Columbus North rebounded to beat No. 9 Homestead 4-1 in the second round and top No. 13 North Central 3-2 in the final round to move its season record to 17-4.

                The host Panthers placed third in the event at 1-2, and Homestead was fourth at 0-3.

                In the first round, CN freshman Ashlie Wilson defeated Carroll senior Mia Toscos 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 singles and Cloteau and Fu topped Chargers sophomore Cecilia Martin and freshman Tori Skender 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.

                But Carroll drew even when senior Bailey Newman beat Bull Dogs senior Shweta Srinivasan 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles and when Chargers senior Katie Beier and junior Maria Casiano defeated CN junior Ali Bergman and sophomore Jaline Tay 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) at No. 1 doubles.

                That made No. 2 singles the decisive point, where Carroll junior Katelyn Van Wyngarden rallied past Bull Dogs junior Eva Chevalier 3-6, 6-4, 10-7.

                In the second round, Wilson, Chevalier, Srinivasan and the tandem of Cloteaux and Fu all tallied points against Homestead.

                Wilson blanked Spartans sophomore Jenna Lewis 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while Chevalier topped Homestead sophomore Olivia Creek 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Srinivason beat Spartans sophomore Madison Zitlaw 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, while Cloteaux and Fu posted a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Homestead junior Pravi Jain and freshman Anna Topmiller at No. 2 doubles.

                The Spartans’ only point game at No. 1 doubles, where senior Payton Krahn and sophomore Morgan Render defeated CN’s Bergman and Tay 6-1, 6-4.

                In the final round against North Central, Chevalier and the Bull Dogs’ tandems of Bergman and Tay as well as Cloteaux and Fu each prevailed in their respective matches.

                Chevalier rolled past Panthers junior Sami Loggan 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, while Bergman and Tay beat North Central sophomore Catherine Grissom and junior Anna Geller 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. Cloteaux and Fu completed their undefeated day with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Panthers senior Jane Wynne and junior Kate Robinson.

                North Central junior spoiled Wilson’s perfect day by claiming a 6-4, 3-6, 11-9 decision at No. 1 singles, while Panthers junior Phoebe Aaron rallied past Srinivasan 2-6, 7-5, 10-4 at No. 3 singles.

                For the day, Wilson went 2-1 at No. 1 singles, Chevalier was 2-1 at No. 2 singles and Srinivasan went 1-2 at No. 3 singles. Bergman and Tay were 1-2 at No. 1 doubles, and Cloteaux and Fu finished 3-0 at No. 2 doubles.

                This event completes the regular season for the Bull Dogs, and they will find out who they will play in the Columbus North Sectional when the IHSAA releases the draw at 7 p.m. Monday (May 13) on Brown County, Columbus East, Edinburgh and Hauser join the Bull Dogs in the five-team sectional.

                One first-round match will be at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday (May 15). The semifinals are set for 4:30 p.m. Thursday (May 16). The sectional final is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Friday (May 17).

                Columbus North is seeking its sixth consecutive sectional crown and its 35th in program history.
