May, Holliday, Thompson share MVP honors for 2016 Columbus North gymnastics

                Columbus North senior Katrina May, junior Ashley Holliday and sophomore Claire Thompson were honored as tri-MVPs of the Bull Dogs’ 2015-16 gymnastics team at the team banquet Thursday evening (April 14) at Harrison Lake Country Club.

                Thompson was the individual state champion on bars, beam and the all-around in leading Columbus North to the 2016 state championship with a meet-record team score of 114.850. Thompson posted a 9.700 on bars and a 9.675 on beam for her event titles. She also was fifth on floor with a 9.500 and 10th on vault with a 9.525 to amass her winning all-around total of 38.400.

                May scored a 9.625 on floor for second at state. She also totaled a 9.575 for third on beam, a 9.625 for seventh on vault and a 9.500 for 11th on bars. She tied for second in the all-around at 38.325. May also was honored with the IHSAA’s Mildred M. Ball Mental Attitude Award.

                Holliday tallied a 9.775 to tie for second state. She also had a 9.525 to tie for third on floor, a 9.525 for ninth on bars and a 9.300 for 12th on beam. She finished fifth at state in the all-around with a 38.125.

                All three athletes also were named to the all-state team by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association, while May was chosen Academic All-State by the ICGSA. May also was honored with the team’s Bull Dog Award.

                In addition, May, Holliday and Thompson were recognized as all-Conference Indiana athletes. Holliday set a CI record in the all-around with a 38.275 while the team set a meet record for team score at 113.175. At the conference meet, Holiday won vault, bars and all-around, while Thompson took the beam and May claimed the floor exercise.

                May also won the vault, floor and all-around in the sectional.

                May and senior Chloe Jorgensen were recognized as 2015-16 team captains.     

                Those presented with varsity letters were seniors Chloe Jorgensen and Katrina May; junior Ashley Holliday; sophomores Kaitlyn Calandro and Claire Thompson; and freshmen Emma Cooper, Tova Edwards, Ragan Gaskill and Bryce Gillihan.

                A JV award went to junior Emily Vo.
