Columbus North wins gymnastics regional; Thompson captures two events and all-around; Holliday takes vault

                COLUMBUS, Ind. – Junior Claire Thompson won two events and the all-around Friday evening (March 3), leading the Columbus North gymnastics team to the championship of the Columbus East Regional.

                Thompson totaled a season-best 38.225 in the all-around while propelling the Bull Dogs to a team score of 111.050 and the program’s fourth consecutive regional crown and 15th overall.

                Bloomington South was runner-up with 110.850 points, and Columbus East was third at 108.925. New Palestine placed fourth with a 104.875 followed by Richmond at 99.575 and Connersville at 97.500.

                Thompson scored a season-best 9.725 to claim a blue ribbon on the balance beam. She also captured the uneven parallel bars with a 9.675. Thompson was second on vault with a 9.625 and ninth on floor exercise with a 9.200.

                CN senior Ashley Holliday was second in the all-around with a 37.075, a score that included a 9.750 and first-place on vault. She also was second on bars with a 9.575, second on beam with a 9.400 and 23rd on floor with an 8.350.

                Bull Dogs freshman Sami Heathcote tied for ninth in the all-around with a 35.700. She scored a season-best 9.450 for sixth place on floor. Heathcote also tied for 10th on bars with an 8.725, finished 15th on beam with an 8.700 and tied for 17th on vault with an 8.825.

                Freshman Alayne Davis placed 18th on bars (8.400), freshman Ashley Niebrugge finished 22nd on floor (8.400) and junior Kaitlyn Calandro was 20th on vault (8.625) and 29th on beam (7.100) to complete the Columbus North results.

                The top three teams and the top six individuals in each event plus the all-around advance to the IHSAA State Finals that are set for Saturday, March 11 at Ball State’s Worthen Arena. Competition begins that day at 1 p.m.

                Columbus North is the defending team champion, and Thompson is the defending individual champion on bars, beam and all-around. Holliday was state champ on bars in 2015.
