Boys Varsity Basketball
Columbus North junior Alex King was recognized as MVP of the Bull Dogs' 2015-16 boys’ basketball team at the team banquet on Wednesday evening (April 6).
A 6-8 forward, King averaged team highs of 14.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.4 steals in helping Columbus North to a 10-14 season. King converted 42 percent from the field, 29 percent on 3-pointers and 79 percent on free throws. In two varsity seasons, he has 470 points and 293 rebounds.
Seniors Mitchell Kelley, Alex Algee and Drew Schoeberl also were recipients of special awards.
Kelley was named winner of the Bull Dog Award. The 6-1 guard-forward averaged 2.6 points and 3.1 rebounds. He shot 43 percent from the field.
Algee was the recipient of the Behrman Big Dog Scholarship, an award that includes a $500 college scholarship. Schoeberl was the winner of the McDonald Mental Attitude Award. Algee, a 6-2 guard, averaged 1.5 points, 0.8 rebounds and 0.8 steals. Schoeberl, a 6-5 forward, contributed 0.6 points and 0.4 rebounds.
Earlier, King was selected first-team all-Conference Indiana and IBCA/Subway honorable mention Underclass All-State. Also, Kelley was chosen IBCA honorable mention Academic All-State.
The following athletes were recognized as varsity lettermen – seniors Alex Algee, Mitchell Kelley and Drew Schoeberl; juniors Zach Green, Alex King, Ethan Mitchell, Stephon Peters-Smith and Nathan VanDeventer; sophomores Jaylen Flemmons, J.D. Harris, Bailey Hester and Trey Vincent; and freshman Trenton Kelley.
JV awards were presented to junior Peyton Russell and sophomores Matt Boldrey, Ross Gill, Damon Hunter Jr., Warren Kiel, Alex King, Caden Nentrup, K.T. Webb and Drew Wilson.
Recipients of freshman team accolades were Riley Ables, Drew Cvelbar, Scotty Flores-Salgado, Dawson Hood, Blake King, Langston Lunsford, Patrick McKinley, Devon Rodgers, Drew Smith, Hunter Spalding, Lakeevan Whedon, Seth Wilkerson and Cameron Ziegler.
