Boys Varsity Basketball
Columbus North senior Jaylen Flemmons was recognized as MVP of the 2017-18 boys’ basketball team at the team awards program on Wednesday evening (April 4).
Flemmons, a 6-3 forward, averaged team highs of 11.8 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots in leading the Bull Dogs to a 14-11 season that included a third-place finish in Conference Indiana. He also added 2.6 assists and 1.0 steals.
Senior Matt Boldrey, junior Trenton Kelley, senior Ross Gill, senior Trey Vincent, senior Bailey Hester and senior Drew Wilson also were recipients of special awards.
Boldrey was named winner of the Bull Dog Award. A 6-0 guard, Boldrey provided 2.6 points, 0.8 rebounds, 0.6 steals and a scrappy approach to defense for the team.
Kelley and Gill were co-recipients of the McDonald Mental Attitude Award. The 6-5 Kelley averaged 5.5 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists. Gill, a 6-2 guard, contributed 2.1 points and 1.4 rebounds.
Vincent received the Behrman Big Dog Scholarship, an award that includes a $500 college scholarship. A 6-0 guard, Vincent averaged 9.6 points, 2.3 rebounds and team bests of 3.6 assists and 1.6 steals.
Hester was the winner of the John Carmichael Memorial Award. The 5-11 guard averaged 9.9 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists. He recently announced his commitment to Taylor University to continue his basketball career.
Wilson was the recipient of the team’s Scholar-Athlete Award. A 6-3 forward, Wilson averaged 0.8 points and 0.4 rebounds.
Earlier, Flemmons was chosen first-team all-Conference Indiana and IBCA/Subway honorable mention Senior All-State. Also, Vincent and Hester were cited as honorable mention all-Conference Indiana, while Gill and Wilson were recognized as IBCA honorable mention Academic All-State. Flemmons and Hester were voted HBCA all-District 3, and Flemmons was selected to play in the HBCA East-West All-Star Game on Sunday (April 8) at Bloomington North.
The following athletes were recognized as varsity lettermen – seniors Matt Boldrey, Jaylen Flemmons, Ross Gill, Bailey Hester, Trey Vincent and Drew Wilson; juniors Trenton Kelley, Patrick McKinley and Lakeevan Whedon; sophomores Casper Clark and Nicholas Schiavello; and freshmen Blake Barker and Reese Harmon.
JV awards were presented to juniors Riley Ables, Blake King and Cameron Ziegler; and sophomores Will King and Cameron Wischmeyer.
Recipients of freshman team accolades were Jacob Bailey, Austin Bode, Kyle Carlson, Luke Enneking, Ja’Bryceson Ford, Luke Golding, Colby Harden, Leighton McGovern, Xavion Saddler, Blake Stevens, Braden Taylor, Preston Terrell, Jakob Trusina, Max Wilson and Trevor Wright.
