Boys Varsity Basketball
Seven Columbus North High School seniors took part in a college-bound student-athlete ceremony on Wednesday (April 11) to finalize their commitments for college athletics and academics.
Two women's basketball players, one men's basketball player, one women's golfer, one women's track athlete and two men's track/cross country athletes were participants in a ceremony in the lobby of the Bill Stearman Athletic Complex.
Student-athletes who were a part of the program were men's basketball player Bailey Hester (Taylor University), women's track athlete Kennedy Cook (Ohio Northern University), women's golfer Danbi Kim (University of Findlay), men's track/cross country athletes Charlie Allen (Marian University) and Peyton Shelton (Southern Wesleyan University), and women's basketball players Kat Norman and Liz Tynan (both, Hanover College).
These seven athletes give CNHS a total of 15 athletes in the Class of 2018 who have announced plans to pursue college athletics. Earlier, eight athletes took part in signing ceremonies in December or February.
More information about the athletes who took part in Wednesday's ceremony and their respective college choices follows:
>> Charlie Allen, men's track/cross country, Marian: Allen placed 18th in the 3,200 meters in 9:36.24 at the 2017 IHSAA boys track state meet. He also finished 72nd in the 2017 boys cross country State Finals in 16:25.2 and had a season-best of 15:57.3 in a 5,000-meter cross country event. He joins a Knights' program that was fourth in the 2018 Crossroads League indoor track meet and third in the 2017 CL cross country meet. Marian competes at the NAIA level.
>> Kennedy Cook, women's track, Ohio Northern: Cook posted a time of 27.45 seconds in the 200-meter dash in the 2017 sectional. She also helped CN's 4x400 relay to a 4:14.73 clocking in the 2017 regional. Cook joins a Polar Bears' program that posted a second-place finish at the 2018 Ohio Athletic Conference indoor championships. ONU women's track also was team champion at the 2017 OAC outdoor championships and tied for eighth place in the 2017 NCAA Division III outdoor nationals.
>> Bailey Hester, men's basketball, Taylor: Hester averaged 9.9 points and 2.0 rebounds to help the Bull Dogs to a 14-11 season and third-place finish in Conference Indiana. The 5-11 guard also added 1.3 assists while shooting 52 percent from the field (80-154), 44 percent from 3-point range (36-81) and 75 percent on free throws (52-69). He joins a Trojans' program that went 16-15 at the NAIA level in 2017-18, including a 7-11 mark in the powerful Crossroads League.
>> Danbi Kim, women's golf, Findlay: Kim placed fifth individually in the 2017 IHSAA girls golf State Finals with a 76-74--150, helping the Bull Dogs to a fourth-place team finish. She averaged 74.27 strokes in 11 18-hole matches as a senior. The two-time all-state selection also tied for fifth place individually in the 2016 State Finals when CN placed third as a team. Kim joins an Oilers program that competes in the NCAA Division II level in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. The Oilers were the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champions and placed third in the D-II East Regional in 2017.
>> Kat Norman, women's basketball, Hanover: Norman saw limited time court time as a senior and junior because of multiple knee injuries. The 6-1 forward totaled 121 points and 118 rebounds in 63 career varsity games while helping the Bull Dogs to the 2015 Class 4A state championship, a 2016 Class 4A state runner-up finish and a 2017 Class 4A final four finish. She joins a Panthers' program that went 18-9 overall and 13-5 in the NCAA Division III Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.
>> Peyton Shelton, men's track/cross country, Southern Wesleyan: Shelton was timed in 10:10.75 for 3,200 meters during an indoor track meet in March. He also placed 111th in 16:39.7 at the 2017 boys cross country State Finals and had a season best of 16:33.6 for 5,000 meters in cross country. Shelton joins a Warriors' program that placed fifth in the 2018 Conference Carolinas indoor track meet and eighth in the 2017 conference cross country meet. Southern Wesleyan University is located in Central, S.C., and competes at the NCAA Division II level.
>> Liz Tynan, women's basketball, Hanover: Tynan averaged 5.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.4 steals while helping CN to a 17-7 season and Conference Indiana title as a senior. The 5-9 guard-forward finished with 245 points and 174 rebounds in 75 career varsity games, also helping CN to the 2015 Class 4A state championship, a 2016 Class 4A state runner-up finish and a 2017 Class 4A final four finish. She also joins a Panthers' program that went 18-9 overall and 13-5 in the HCAC.
