Schiavello's second-half flurry helps Bull Dogs edge Southport 49-48 in boys basketball

COLUMBUS, Ind. – Junior Nicholas Schiavello scored 19 points all in the second half Friday evening (Jan. 25), leading the Columbus North boys basketball team to a 49-48 victory over Southport in Memorial Gym.

Senior Patrick McKinley contributed 11 points and senior Trenton Kelley netted 10 points as the Bull Dogs improved to 12-4 overall and 3-0 in Conference Indiana. Sophomore Reese Harmon provided five points, including two key late free throws, and sophomore Blake Barker had four points.

Senior Jayaun Moore scored 14 points and junior Matthew Munoz tallied 11 points to pace the Cardinals (8-7, 1-2). Senior Brian Miller chipped in nine points, junior Ryan Lezon provided eight points and junior Brevin Jefferson had six points.

McKinley scored seven points and Kelley had five points as Columbus North overcame a slow start for a 12-11 edge at the first stop. Moore scored six points and Miller netted four points in the second quarter as Southport took a 21-14 lead at intermission.

Schiavello scored 12 points and Harmon had a three-point play in the third quarter as the Bull Dogs rallied to take a 33-32 advantage at the third stop. Schiavello scored seven points in the fourth quarter while Barker and Kelley each sank important 3-pointers to give CN a 47-46 lead in the late going.

Harmon converted two free throws to push the edge to three before Jefferson sank two to make the margin one again. Schiavello could not hit the front of a one-and-one in the waning moments. Then after three timeouts with 3.7 seconds to go, one by Southport and two by Columbus North, the Bull Dogs forced a muff on a long inbounds pass and Miller’s desperation 3-point shot from just past midcourt missed.

Columbus North prevailed in both sub-varsity contests.

In the JV game, sophomore Jakub Trusina scored 18 points and classmate Braden Taylor provided 15 points as the Bull Dogs captured a 59-46 decision. Junior Will King chipped in 12 points and junior Cameron Wischmeyer had 10 points for CN (9-4). Sophomore Jose Arizpe scored 20 points to lead Southport.

At the freshman level, Sam King scored nine points to lead a balanced effort as Columbus North took a 36-26 victory. Will Baker and Ben Kleinhenz each added five points for the Bull Dogs (9-6). Jalen Snyder tallied 13 points for the Cardinals.

Columbus North returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 26) with a tripleheader at Whiteland. JV and freshman games begin at 6 p.m., and the varsity follows the JV about 7:30 p.m.
