Boys Varsity Basketball
Columbus North sophomore Blake Barker and junior Nicholas Schiavello were recognized as co-MVPs of the 2018-19 boys’ basketball team at the team awards program on Monday evening (April 1).
Barker, a 6-0 guard, averaged 17.0 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.9 steals in keying the Bull Dogs to a 16-8 record that included a 4-1 mark and runner-up finish in Conference Indiana. Schiavello, a 6-3 guard-forward, contributed 15.3 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.0 assists to the effort.
Senior Riley Ables, senior Cameron Ziegler, senior Trenton Kelley, senior Blake King and senior Patrick McKinley also were recipients of special awards.
Ables was named winner of the Bull Dog Award. A 6-1 guard, Ables provided 1.8 points, 1.4 rebounds, 1.0 steals and a scrappy approach to defense for the team.
Ziegler was the recipient of the McDonald Mental Attitude Award. The 5-10 Ziegler contributed 2.1 points and 1.0 rebounds.
Kelley received the Behrman Big Dog Scholarship, an award that includes a $500 college scholarship. A 6-5 forward, Kelley averaged 7.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.2 steals.
King was the winner of the John Carmichael Memorial Award. The 6-3 guard averaged 2.8 points and 1.0 rebounds.
McKinley was the recipient of the team’s Scholar-Athlete Award. A 6-3 forward, McKinley averaged 5.5 points and 5.1 rebounds.
Earlier, Barker, Schiavello and Kelley were voted first-team all-Conference Indiana while sophomore Reese Harmon was chosen honorable mention all-conference. Barker and Schiavello were selected IBCA/Subway honorable mention Underclass All-State, while Kelley and McKinley were chosen IBCA honorable mention Academic All-State. Also, Kelley and McKinley were chosen HBCA all-District 3.
The following athletes were recognized as varsity lettermen – seniors Riley Ables, Trenton Kelley, Blake King, Patrick McKinley and Cameron Ziegler; juniors Will King, Nicholas Schiavello and Cameron Wischmeyer; and sophomores Blake Barker, Reese Harmon and Jakub Trusina.
JV awards were presented to sophomores Kyle Carlson, Ja’Bryceson Ford, Luke Golding, Diego Ocampo, Blake Stevens, Braden Taylor, Max Wilson and Trevor Wright.
Recipients of freshman team accolades were Noah Abfall, Will Baker, Owen Barkes, Trent Bodart, Qwenton Bolden, Keegan Castetter, Carson Dibble, Rhett Harmon, Sam King, Ben Kleinhenz, Aaron Krider,Neal Likens, Brady Thomas and Bryant Trinkle.
