Barker recognized as MVP of Columbus North 2019-2020 boys basketball

                Junior Blake Barker has been named MVP of the 2019-2020 Columbus North boys’ basketball team in a set of team awards announced Wednesday (April 8) by Bull Dogs coach Paul Ferguson.

                Barker, a 6-1 guard, averaged 17.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.8 steals in leading the Bull Dogs to an 18-6 record that included a 3-2 ledger and third-place finish in Conference Indiana. In addition, Barker connected on 50.9 percent on field goals (138-of-271), 41.0 percent on 3-pointers (41-of-100) and 73.9 percent on free throws (99-of-134). He finished the season with 1,073 career points, fifth on the CHS/CNHS all-time list with one season to go.

                Junior Reese Harmon and seniors Nicholas Schiavello, Casper Clark, Will King and Cameron Wischmeyer also were recipients of special awards.

                Harmon was named winner of the Bull Dog Award. A 5-11 guard, Harmon provided 6.9 points, 2.3 rebounds, a team-best 4.3 assists, 1.5 steals and consistent all-out hustle for the team. Harmon converted 46.8 percent from the field (58-of-124), 34.9 percent on 3-pointers (22-of-63) and 79.4 percent on free throws (27-of-34).

                Schiavello was the recipient of the John Carmichael Memorial Award, which includes a $500 scholarship with the award. A 6-4 wing, Schiavello averaged 13.0 points, 4.1 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.8 steals. He shot 59.1 percent from the field (123-of-208), 38.3 percent from 3-point range (23-of-60) and 69.8 percent (44-of-63) from the free throw line. Schiavello completed his career with 687 points, putting him in 25th place on the CHS/CNHS all-time scoring list.

                Clark received the Behrman Big Dog Scholarship, an award that includes a $500 college scholarship. A 6-6 forward, Clark averaged 7.3 points and 4.2 rebounds. He hit 56.9 percent from the field (74-of-130) and 49.1 percent from the free throw line (27-of-55).

                King was named winner of the McDonald Mental Attitude Award. The 6-2 King contributed 3.5 points and 2.3 rebounds. He converted 62.5 percent from the field (30-of-48) and 60.6 percent from the line (20-of-33).

                Wischmeyer was the recipient of the team’s Scholar-Athlete Award. A 6-5 forward, Wischmeyer averaged 3.6 points and 2.2 rebounds while shooting 58.6 percent from the field (34-of-58).

                Earlier, Barker and Schiavello were voted first-team all-Conference Indiana while Harmon was chosen honorable mention all-conference. Barker was voted IBCA/Subway Underclass Large School All-State, while Schiavello was selected IBCA/Subway Senior honorable mention All-State.

                Schiavello and Clark were chosen HBCA all-District 2, and Schiavello was picked for the East team in the HBCA East-West All-Star Classic.

                Schiavello and Wischmeyer were selected IBCA honorable mention Academic All-State.

                The following athletes were recognized as varsity lettermen – seniors Casper Clark, Will King, Nicholas Schiavello and Cameron Wischmeyer; juniors Blake Barker, Diing Diing, Reese Harmon, Jakub Trusina and Max Wilson; sophomore Sam King; and freshman Cooper Horn.

                JV awards from a 16-4 squad were presented to juniors Ja’Bryceson Ford, Braden Taylor and Trevor Wright as well as sophomores Noah Abfall, Will Baker, Trent Bodart, Carson Dibble, Rhett Harmon, Ben Kleinhenz and Brady Thomas.

                Recipients of team accolades from an undefeated freshman team were Savion Banks, Tyler Blythe, Leon Brown, Blake Burton, Damon Edwards, Ty Ferguson, Osain Guest, Luke Harmon, Zac Horn, Max Mormino, Jack Schiavello and Bradford White. The freshman team finished 21-0 for its season.
