Carmel knocks off Columbus North 61-51 in boys basketball season opener

CARMEL, Ind. – Junior Peter Suder scored 22 points and senior Brian Waddell added 16 points Tuesday evening (Nov. 24), leading the Carmel boys basketball team to a 61-51 victory over Columbus North in the Greyhounds’ gym.

Senior Connor Gioia contributed seven points, while junior Josh Whack and senior Will Leary each tallied six points as the hosts converted 22-of-25 free throws en route to the season-opening triumph.

Senior Blake Barker led the visiting Bull Dogs with 21 points. Sophomore Cooper Horn chipped in 11 points, while senior Jakub Trusina netted eight points and senior Reese Harmon had seven points.

Columbus North hung tough for much of the game and trailed by just 41-40 early in the fourth quarter. But a Suder 3-pointer and baskets by Gioia and Waddell gave the hosts some breathing room, and the hosts squelched any hopes of a Bull Dogs’ comeback by hitting 13-of-14 free throws down the stretch.

By contrast, free throws were an Achilles’ heel for Columbus North. It made just 11-of-20 attempts from the charity stripe for the game, including 2-of-7 over the first three quarters.

Carmel also prevailed in both sub-varsity contests.

In the JV game, Lucas Parker scored 10 points to lead the Greyhounds to a 56-33 decision. Sam Orme and Jared Bonds each added nine points and Clay Richards had seven points for the winners. Sophomore Luke Harmon scored 11 points to lead the Bull Dogs. Junior Rhett Harmon chipped in six points, and sophomore Ty Ferguson had four points.

At the freshman level, Tyler Walker scored 16 points and Owen Huser chipped in six points as Carmel captured a 34-23 triumph. Connor Hensley totaled 14 points to pace the Bull Dogs (1-1). Dillon James contributed six points and Ivan Leal had three points.

Columbus North returns to action on Friday (Nov. 27) when it visits Jennings County for a tripleheader. JV and freshman games begin at 6 p.m., and the varsity game follows the JV at about 7:30 p.m. The Bull Dogs complete a busy opening week on Saturday (Nov. 28) when they travel to Seymour for another tripleheader. JV and freshman games begin at 6 p.m., and the varsity game follows the JV at about 7:30 p.m.
