BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Junior Janelle Peters produced eight kills, two aces and nine digs Saturday (Oct. 26), leading the Columbus North volleyball team to a 3-0 upset of Bloomington South in a Class 4A Sectional 14 semifinal match Saturday (Oct. 26) at Bloomington North.
Junior Makinsey Summa added six kills and two blocks for the Bull Dogs, who improved to 13-20 by pulling off the 25-22, 25-16, 25-20 to pull off the decision.
Junior Karen Wildeman contributed four kills, 16 digs and 23 assists, while sophomore Avery Wendel chipped in four kills. Junior Hayley McMahan notched four aces, and freshman Maliah Howard tallied three aces. Vittorio complemented Wildemann and Peters on defense with six digs.
CN used a 7-0 surge to overcome a 17-13 deficit to take control of the first set, Howard at serve for the flurry. McMahan added consecutive aces for points 23 and 24, and a Bloomington South error resulted in set point.
The Bull Dogs took charge early in the second set, jumping to leads of 6-1 and 11-3. The Panthers rallied to 12-5, but an ace by senior Devon Roese spurred a 4-0 burst as they pushed the edge to 21-11. Bloomington South (20-11) tried to muster a comeback, but a McMahan ace combined with three Wendel kills closed out the set.
Columbus North kept the momentum in the third set, Summa helping the 'Dogs to a 7-2 advantage. A Summa kill, a Peters kill and a Wendel block sparked another 7-2 run for a 14-5 lead, and CN held on to pull off the upset. A Peters kill, a Wendel-Wildemann tandem block and a Wendel kill allowed the Bull Dogs to maintain a 23-20 lead, then the matched finished on two Bloomington South errors.
Columbus North will play Columbus East (23-12) in the sectional championship at 7 p.m. Saturday. The Olympians defeated Bloomington North 25-10, 25-10, 25-22 in the second semifinal. The Cougars completed their season at 11-21.
