BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Sophomore Makinsey Summa pounded down 13 kills and classmate Janelle Peters added nine Thursday evening (Oct. 18), leading the Columbus North volleyball team past East Central 3-1 in a Class 4A Sectional 14 first-round match.
The Bull Dogs (10-24) dropped the first set, but they recovered to capture the second, third and fourth sets to prevail 22-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-20. East Central finished its season at 25-8.
Sophomore Karen Wildemann contributed seven kills, while junior Devon Roese notched three aces and senior Quin Shoultz had 31 assists for Columbus North.
Defensively, sophomore Alexa Pelley produced 21 digs, Wildemann 14 digs and Peters 11 digs. Summa paced the front-row defense with four blocks.
"The girls played well," Bull Dogs coach Caitlin Greiner said.
The decision moves Columbus North into a semifinal match at 11 a.m. Saturday (Oct. 20) against Class 4A No. 8 Shelbyville (26-4). The Golden Bears defeated host Bloomington South 25-20, 25-23, 25-16 in the other first-round match.
Class 4A No. 3 Columbus East (28-4) faces Bloomington North (16-13) in the second semifinal. The semifinal winners return for the sectional title match at 7 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 20).
The sectional winner will host the regional against the Franklin Sectional winner at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 23).
