New-look Bull Dogs look to make progress in volleyball in 2012

Aug. 13, 2012

It a new group in virtually every way for Columbus North volleyball.
With a new coach in Caitlin Greiner, new intensity and almost an entirely new cast, the Bull Dogs seek to make progress from an 18-16 mark in 2011.
The one returning starter, senior Quin Shoultz, is key. The 5-10 setter brings quality and experience to a group that has little other court time at the varsity level, factors that Greiner said will be significant.
Sophomores Karen Wildemann, a 5-8 outside hitter and setter, and Makinsey Summa, a 5-10 middle hitter, both earned some varsity time a year ago. For everyone else, the level is a first-time situation.
Still, Greiner thinks her team's youth could be a plus.
"This is a great advantage in my eyes because opponents may underestimate our potential," Greiner said. "We have a very experienced setter running the floor (in Shoultz) with a several juniors ready to step into more leadership roles (5-9 outside hitter Tessa Krempel, 5-10 middle hitter Mara Krempel and 5-6 defensive specialist Devon Roese).
"Although there is not much varsity experience coming from our sophomore class, they are very athletic and have been working hard to step up to the challenge of playing at a higher level."
Sophomores expected to join Wildemann and Summa in making contributions are 5-9 middle hitter Janelle Peters, 5-9 right-side hitter Hayley McMahan and 5-4 libero Hannah Vittorio. Also, 5-9 freshman outside hitter Avery Wendel appears set to offer support.
Greiner notes the Bull Dogs have a lot of versatile players who can play multiple positions. She said she hopes to move players when needed to take advantage of matchups.
"There is a lot of room to grow, and the girls have opened up to the new coaching techniques," Greiner said. "It is exciting to see the improvements each player already has made."
