SHELBYVILLE, Ind. -- Junior Zoe Laker pounded down 13 kills and added 13 digs and three blocks Thursday evening (Aug. 20), leading the Shelbyville volleyball team to a 3-2 victory over visiting Columbus North.
Senior Morgan Parker chipped in eight kills and two blocks for the Golden Bears, who improved to 1-1 for the season with the 26-28, 25-9, 25-19, 20-25, 15-12 decision.
Junior Maliah Howard-Bass paced Columbus North (0-1) with 12 kills while adding seven digs, three blocks and 11 assists. Senior Avery Wendel contributed six kills, while senior Anne Marie Kiel and junior Hannah Weaver each tallied five kills.
Weaver posted a match-best five blocks, while Wendel tallied three blocks. Junior Mackenzie Rooks totaled a team-best 20 digs, and senior Hannah McKinney notched a team-high 18 assists.
Junior Hannah Dwenger contributed 16 assists and three service aces for Shelbyville, while sophomore Samantha Watson produced 17 digs. Senior Marissa Akers and junior Abby Orem paced the front-line defense with four blocks apiece for the hosts team.
In the JV match, Shelbyville took a 2-1 triumph. Junior Imani Guy and freshman Lily Meyercord paced CN with three kills apiece, while freshman Andrea Corbeels, freshman Falesha Ronsheim and sophomore Katie McAninch each had two kills. Sophomore Sidney Roese tallied six digs and three aces, while sophomore Emma Perry had five digs and two aces. Junior Meredith Kirts also had three aces.
The Columbus North varsity returns to action on Saturday (Aug. 22) when it competes in the Eastern Greene Invitational. CN faces Sullivan at 10:15 a.m. and host Eastern Greene at 11:30 a.m. in the three-team round-robin event. The JV does not play on Saturday.
The Bull Dog freshman team opens its season Saturday in the six-team Bloomington South Freshman Invitatational. CN plays Bloomington North at 10:15 a.m. and Brownstown Central at 11:30 a.m. in pool matches. Bloomington South, Seymour and Bedford North Lawrence are in the other pool. The pool winners play for the tournament championship at 1 p.m.
