BLOOMFIELD, Ind. -- Junior Maliah Howard-Bass knocked down five kills while senior Avery Wendel and juniors Hannah Weaver and Imani Guy each tallied four kills Saturday (Aug. 22), helping the Columbus North volleyball team knock off Eastern Greene 2-0 for second place in the Eastern Greene Invitational.
Howard-Bass added nine digs, two blocks and six assists as the Bull Dogs posted a 25-19, 25-21 victory over the Thunderbirds to go 1-1 in the three-team, round-robin competition. Guy chipped in three blocks, while Weaver and freshman Agustina Fainguerch had two blocks apiece.
Wendel added five digs, while junior Madelin Johnson tallied four service aces and seven assists.
Earlier, Sullivan knocked off the Bull Dogs 25-16, 25-23. Weaver paced CN with six kills in that match, while Wendel and Fainguerch each produced five kills.
Senior Hannah McKinney notched 11 assists and nine digs against the Golden Arrows, while Howard-Bass had six assists, nine digs and two blocks. Weaver also had two blocks, while senior Grace Sonderman tallied two aces.
Sullivan defeated Eastern Greene 25-17, 12-25, 15-13 to go 2-0 in the event and claim the championship. Columbus North was second at 1-1, and host Eastern Green was third at 0-2.
At the freshman level, Columbus North went 0-2 in the Bloomington South Invitational, the opening event for the CN freshman team. Bloomington North rallied past the Bull Dogs 16-25, 25-16, 15-13 in the opener. Brownstown Central defeated Columbus North 25-16, 25-9 in the second match.
Columbus North volleyball returns to action on Tuesday (Aug. 25) when it hosts Perry Meridian in its Conference Indiana East Division opener. JV and freshman matches begin at 6 p.m., and the varsity follows the JV about 7 p.m.
