NEW ALBANY -- The Columbus North volleyball team went 2-2 Saturday (Sept. 19) in the Ultra Ankle Challenge at New Albany, placing fourth in the eight-team event.
The Bull Dogs opened by beating New Albany 25-17, 23-25, 25-18. However, they lost to Jasper 25-21, 22-25, 25-12 in their second match. They completed pool play with a 25-15, 25-15 victory over Jeffersonville.
In a crossover match for third place, Silver Creek beat the Bull Dogs 25-11, 25-15, dropping CN's season record to 8-12.
The Bull Dogs, Jasper and host New Albany all went 2-1 in pool play, while Jeffersonville went 0-3. In the other pool, Floyd Central went 3-0, Silver Creek went 2-1, Brownstown Central went 1-2 and Castle went 0-3.
Floyd Central defeated New Albany 2-1 in the championship match. Brownstown Central defeated Jasper 2-0 for fifth place. Jeffersonville defeated Castle for seventh place.
The Columbus North JV and freshman teams also competed in separate events -- the JV in the Roncalli Invitational and the freshman in the Bloomington North Invitational.
The Bull Dogs' JV went 0-3 in the Roncalli Invitational to fall to 5-11 for the season. Roncalli and Cathedral each defeated Columbus North 2-0, while Seymour topped CN 2-1.
At the freshman level, Columbus North went 1-2 with a victory over Whiteland (25-17, 25-9) and setbacks to Bloomington North (25-16, 26-13) and Columbus East (25-13, 25-13). Jenna Fath totaled eight aces and Alyona Rosenthal notched five aces to paced the freshman team, now 4-7 for the season.
Columbus North returns to action on Thursday (Sept. 24) when it visits Martinsville. JV and freshman matches are set for 5:30 p.m., and the varsity will follow the JV about 6:30 p.m.
