The Columbus North volleyball team will face Bloomington North in a first-round match in Class 4A Sectional 14 at Shelbyville, according to pairings drawn Monday (Oct. 12) at the IHSAA offices in Indianapolis.
The match is set for 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22 at Shelbyville, site for all the matches in the six-team sectional competition.
The winner of the CN-BN will face the winner of the other first-round match between Bloomington South and Columbus East in the 11 a.m. semifinal on Saturday, Oct. 24. East Central and host Shelbyville will square off in the second semifinal.
The semifinal winners will return at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24 for the sectional championship match.
Senior Avery Wendel along with juniors Imani Guy and Maliah Howard-Bass are among the leaders for Columbus North (10-20). The Bull Dogs also look to senior Hannah McKinney, senior Grace Sonderman, junior Mackenzie Rooks and freshmen Agustina Fainguersch and Maddy Sebahar.
Senior Claire Taylor and sophomore Shea Barrow are top attackers for Bloomington North (18-9). Juniors Haley Stults and Zoe Merriit are other front-row threats, while senior Allie Beam is the primary setter. Junior Julia Wood is the team's best back-row player and leads the Cougars in aces.
Bloomington North defeated Columbus North 25-20, 25-11, 26-24 on Sept. 1.
Columbus North is seeking its first sectional title, while Bloomington North goes after its seventh sectional crown and first since 2005.
Bloomington South (18-7), which won the Conference Indiana Tournament last Saturday at Terre Haute South, chases its 14th sectional crown and first since 1996. Class 4A co-No. 10 Columbus East (22-6) is the three-time defending sectional champion and seeks its 23rd sectional title. East Central (19-11) seeks its 12th sectional title and first since 1992. Shelbyville goes after its 20th sectional crown and third in a row after dropping to Class 3A the past two years. The Golden Bears, now back in 4A, won Sectional 14 in 2011.
This year's sectional winner will compete to a one-match regional on Oct. 27 at the site of the Sectional 13 winner. Sectional 13 includes Class 4A No. 4 Center Grove and 4A No. 12 Franklin. Center Grove is host for that sectional.
The regional winner advances to a four-team semistate on Saturday, Oct. 31 at Seymour.
The semistate winner qualifies for the one-match Class 4A state championship at 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7 at Ball State's Worthen Arena in Muncie.
Sectional admission is $6 per session or $10 for an all-session pass.
