Girls Varsity Volleyball
NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The Columbus North volleyball team went 1-3 on Saturday (Sept. 16) to place sixth in the Ultra Ankle Challenge at New Albany High School.
The Bull Dogs went 1-2 in their pool, falling to Jasper (23-25, 14-25) and to host New Albany (15-25, 25-27) before rebounding to beat Jeffersonville (25-13, 25-18).
In the match for fifth place, Castle defeated the Bull Dogs 26-24, 23-25, 15-11. CN’s season record moved to 10-8 after these results.
For the day, junior Agustina Fainguersch totaled 58 kills and 28 digs over the four matches. Sophomore Emma Tynan added 22 kills and two blocks, while senior Katie McAninch tallied 19 kills. Junior Lily Meyercord provided 70 assists, 12 digs and two service aces, while junior Maddy Sebahar posted 58 digs and six aces. Sophomore Gabby Genth also had two blocks.
“We had moments of playing good volleyball and moments that lacked intensity,” CN assistant coach Andrea Behling said. “We improved with each match. By the end of the day, we were starting to execute what we have been working on in practice.”
Floyd Central was the champion of the eight-school competition, beating New Albany 25-21, 27-25 in the title match.
In Indianapolis, the Columbus North JV went 1-2 in the Roncalli Invitational. The host Rebels beat the Bull Dogs 25-22, 25-17 in the first round. Brownstown Central topped CN 15-25, 25-21, 15-7 in the second round. Columbus North defeated Seymour 25-22, 25-10 in the final round. The Bull Dogs’ JV is 10-6 following this event.
The Columbus North varsity and JV teams are back in action Thursday (Sept. 21) when they visit Martinsville. The JV begins at 6 p.m., and the varsity follows about 7 p.m.
The Bull Dogs’ varsity competes in the Muncie Central Invitational next Saturday (Sept. 23) – 9 a.m. against Muncie Central, noon against Elkhart Memorial, 1 p.m. against Wapahani and a placement-round match at either 3 p.m. or 4 p.m. against Yorktown, Mishawaka Marian, McCutcheon or Lawrence North.
