Girls Varsity Volleyball
The Columbus North volleyball team will face Columbus East in the semifinal round of Class 4A Sectional 14 at Columbus North, according to pairings drawn Monday (Oct. 2) at the IHSAA offices in Indianapolis.
The match is set for 12:30 p.m.. Saturday, Oct. 14 in Memorial Gym, site for all the matches in the six-team sectional competition.
First-round matches on Thursday, Oct. 12 will feature Bloomington North against East Central and Bloomington South against Shelbyville. The BN-East Central match will start at 6 p.m., and the BS-Shelbyville match will follow.
The first-round winners will meet in the first semifinal at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14. The Olympians and Bull Dogs, who each have a first-round bye, will play in the second semifinal. The semifinal winners will return at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14 for the sectional championship match.
Junior Agustina Fainguersch, junior Lily Meyercord and junior Maddy Sebahar are leaders for Columbus North (13-12). The Bull Dogs also look to senior Katie McAninch, junior Lauryn James, sophomore Gabby Genth and sophomore Emma Tynan among their key players.
Sophomore Allison Mack, junior Rilee Jessee, senior C.J. Claussen and senior Kendal Williams set the pace for Columbus East (8-19). Other key Olympians include junior Emily Bannister and senior Ashlyn Bergman.
Columbus East defeated Columbus North 22-25, 18-25, 25-17, 25-13, 15-13 on Sept. 28. The Bull Dogs defeated Shelbyville 3-2 on Aug. 17 and defeated Bloomington North 3-2 on Aug. 29. CN hosts Bloomington South in a regular season match at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 3). The Bull Dogs have not faced East Central this season.
Columbus North is seeking its first sectional title, while five-time defending champion Columbus East goes after its 25th sectional crown.
Bloomington North (19-4) is seeking its seventh sectional title and first since 2005. East Central (23-3) is after its 12th sectional crown and first since 1992. Bloomington South (17-8) chases its 14th sectional crown and first since 1996. Shelbyville (5-15) goes after its 20th sectional title and first since a 3A crown in 2014.
The sectional champion qualifies for the Seymour Regional on Oct. 21, where it will face the New Albany Sectional winner in the first semifinal. Sectional winners from Martinsville and Evansville Harrison meet in the second regional semifinal. The regional final will be later on Oct. 21.
The regional winner advances to a one-match semi-state on Saturday, Oct. 28 at Columbus East or Jasper.
The semi-state winner qualifies for the one-match Class 4A state championship at 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4 at Ball State's Worthen Arena in Muncie.
Sectional admission is $6 per session or $10 for an all-session pass.
