Columbus North volleyball falls to Terre Haute North, beats Terre Haute South

                TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Senior Emma Tynan pounded down 16 kills and sophomore Sarah Bennett tallied 12 kills, three blocks and three service aces Saturday (Oct. 12), leading the Columbus North volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Terre Haute South in its final match of the regular season.

                Earlier, the Bull Dogs dropped a 3-1 decision to Terre Haute North in a four-match Conference Indiana event at Terre Haute South that also included Southport.

                By going 1-1 for the day, Columbus North completed its regular season at 8-16 overall and 2-3 in league play. Bloomington South captured the CI title at 5-0 with Bloomington North and Southport sharing second place at 3-2. The Bull Dogs took fourth, and Terre Haute North and Terre Haute South tied for fifth at 1-4.

                Against the host Braves, senior Gabby Genth added eight kills and junior Madi Roop had seven kills as the Bull Dogs captured a 25-22, 25-17, 23-25, 25-19 triumph. Senior Jalynn Reardon pin-pointed seven aces, while senior Kate Whaley provided three aces.

                Sophomore Reagan Kane totaled four blocks, 42 assists and six digs, while junior Madison White produced five blocks. Sophomore Sydney Cooper collected a team-best 14 digs and Genth chipped in seven digs.

                For Terre Haute South, senior Michaela Cox totaled 15 killls, five aces and three blocks; sophomore Courtney Jones provided 11 kills, three aces and two blocks; and sophomore Jade Runyan notched 32 assists. Also, sophomore Emma Hooper tallied 21 digs and sophomore Ashlyn Swan had 13 digs.

                In the opening match, where Terre Haute North prevailed 25-19, 25-13, 14-25, 25-23, Tynan paced the Columbus North attack with nine kills. Bennett and Roop each added eight kills, while Genth totaled seven kills and White had five kills.

                Whaley tallied five aces, while Kane provided three aces and 32 assists. Bennett and White each had two blocks, while Reardon totaled 18 digs and Cooper had 16 digs.

                At the JV level the Bull Dogs ended their season with a pair of victories to close with a 7-12 record. They defeated Terre Haute North 25-23, 21-25, 15-10 and beat Terre Haute South 23-25, 25-21, 19-17.

                Sophomore Nya Davis totaled nine kills for the day to pace the JV squad. Freshman Logan Branstetter chipped in seven kills, while freshman Moana Steele tallied four kills and freshman Grace Barkes, sophomore Sydney Donica and sophomore Paige Osbourne each had three kills. Freshman Emma Burns totaled 21 assists and three aces, while sophomore Emma Martin had seven assists and five aces.

                The Columbus North varsity returns to action at 6 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 17) when it faces Bloomington South in the first round of the Bloomington North Sectional. The sectional starts with Bloomington North playing East Central at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 15). Martinsville and Bedford North Lawrence meet in a first-round match at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

                Columbus East faces the Bloomington North-East Central winner in the first semifinal at 11 a.m. next Saturday (Oct. 12). The Thursday winners play in the second semifinal at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The semifinal winners square off for the sectional championship at 7 p.m. next Saturday.
