Girls Varsity Volleyball
October 13, 2021 - Head coach Jenna Ortega’s first year in charge of the Columbus North volleyball team saw great improvement in a number of areas, but not enough to overcome a 25-5 Martinsville squad in the first round of the Sectional tournament. The Bull Dogs (9-22) fell to the Artesians in three sets 19-25, 13-25, 24-26. The third set was an excellent reflection of the Bull Dogs’ entire season. They showed glimpses of brilliance and the ability to compete with anyone in the state, a couple of mental errors, a handful of fundamental errors, and in the end, came up just short on the scoreboard.
Sydney Cooper led the Dogs in serving (seven points and two aces) as well as in digs (seven). Reagan Kane had 22 assists and Grace Chapman added six digs. Sarah Bennett led in hitting with seven kills and Kayla Jones added four kills for Columbus North.
For the season, Sarah Bennett led the Dogs with 228 kills and 54 blocks, Reagan Kane led servers with 182 points served and 38 aces, as well as topping the Bull Dogs with 598 assists. Grace Chapman topped digging statistics with 482.
Bull Dog seniors playing their last high school match for the Bull Dogs include Sarah Bennett, Reagan Kane, Grace Chapman, Paige Osbourne, and Emma Martin. All six of these seniors were recently named Academic All-State by the Indiana High School Volleyball Coaches Association.
