Smith claims 106-pound title as CN wrestling places fifth in Jennings County Sectional; four Bull Dogs qualify for regional

                NORTH VERNON, Ind. – Junior Morgan Smith won the championship at 106 pounds Saturday (Jan. 27), leading the Columbus North wrestling team to a fifth-place finish in the Jennings County Sectional.

                Senior Brigham Kleinhenz, junior Bradley Gutierrez and sophomore Keandre Watson earned respective runner-up finishes for the Bull Dogs, who totaled 117.5 points in the 10-school competition and will send four wrestlers to the Jeffersonville Regional next Saturday (Feb. 3).

                The top four finishers in each weight class qualified for the regional.

                Columbus East won the team title with 293.5 points and nine individual crowns in the 14 divisions. Jennings County was second with 184.5 points followed by Seymour with 177.5, Madison with 168.5 and Columbus North.

                Smith headlined the Bull Dogs’ day by going 3-0 at 106 pounds and posting a 5-3 decision over Seymour’s Isaiah Pichardo for the division medal.

                Kleinhenz, Gutierrez and Watson went 2-1, respectively, in the 170-, 220- and 126-pound divisions. Jennings County’s Zane Beineke pinned Kleinhenz (CN) at 3:15 of the 170-pound title match. Columbus East’s Jacob Bolte edged Gutierrez 3-2 in the 220-pound title match. The Olympians’ Cayden Rooks defeated Watson 11-3 in the 126-pound title match.

                Three Columbus North athletes finished fifth in their respective divisions – freshman Tyler Williams at 113 pounds, junior Dallin Anderson at 138 pounds and freshman Royce Lofton at 145. Also, CN junior Tay Wells placed sixth at 195 pounds.

                Going to the regional, Smith will carry a 27-10 mark to Jeffersonville. Also, Kleinhenz moves on at 36-4, Gutierrez is 17-10 and Watson is 22-7.
