Smith wins wrestling regional at 113 pounds, Gutierrez placed third at 285, Bull Dogs finish eighth as a team

                JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. – Senior Morgan Smith claimed the championship at 113 pounds and classmate Bradley Gutierrez placed third at 285 pounds on Saturday (Feb. 2), highlighting the efforts by the Columbus North wrestling team in the Jeffersonville Regional.

                Smith went 3-0 for the day and moved to 26-5 for the season while advancing as a No. 1 seed to the Evansville Semi-State next Saturday (Feb. 9). He pinned North Harrison’s Jayden Skaggs in 32 seconds, posted a 6-2 decision over Brown County’s Brandon Leslie and beat Brandon Bryant of Eastern (Pekin) 7-2 in the title bout.

                Gutierrez when 2-1 for the day to move to 17-7 for the season. He beat Tell City’s Chance Bolin 4-1 in the first round, fell 3-2 in a tiebreaker to Seymour’s Gabe Ramirez in the semifinals and then pinned Charlestown’s Sean Baker in 36 seconds in the third-place match.

                The Bull Dogs had four other wrestlers in the regional, but they each were eliminated in the first round.

                >> At 106 pounds, Crawford County’s Donnie Feeler posted a 13-1 major decision over CN freshman Joshua Nelson. Nelson finished at 12-7.

                >> At 145 pounds, Tell City’s Corey Braunecker pinned Bull Dogs junior Keandre Watson at the 1:04 mark. Watson closed at 7-3.

                >> At 160 pounds, Tell City’s Nigel Kaiser recorded a 10-0 major decision over CN freshman Jared Slocum. Slocum completed his season at 9-14.

                >> At 170 pounds, Jeffersonville’s Tyler Hughes posted a 10-6 decision over Bull Dogs junior Nick Holt. Holt finished with a 13-13 record.

                Columbus North totaled 31 points to place eighth of 20 teams in the regional. Columbus East won the event with 226.5 points. Jeffersonville was runner-up with 132.5 points followed by Tell City with 103.5, Seymour with 49 and Brown County with 42.
