Columbus North senior Morgan Smith was recognized as MVP of the Bull Dogs’ 2018-19 wrestling team at the team awards program on Wednesday evening (March 6).
Smith, who captured sectional and regional titles in the 113-pound weight class, was one of five athletes to receive presentations in the season-ending gathering in CN’s Large Group Instruction room.
As a team, the Bull Dogs were 3-23 in dual meets, placed fourth in Conference Indiana, fifth in the Jennings County Sectional and eighth in the Jeffersonville Regional.
Smith posted the team’s most victories with a 27-6 record. He placed third in the CI meet, won titles in the sectional and regional, and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the semi-state before being eliminated from the state tournament. Smith lost to Monrovia sophomore Ben Dalton in the “ticket round” of the semi-state; Dalton ultimately placed third in the state meet.
Others presented special awards were senior Dallin Anderson, freshman Hector De Dios, freshman Jared Slocum II and freshman Carlos Rodriguez.
Anderson, who posted a 14-14 record mostly at 152 pounds, was won the Bull Dog Award. He placed third in Conference Indiana and fifth in the sectional.
De Dios was honored as the team’s Most Improved wrestler. He totaled a 5-23 record while competing in the 170- and 182-pound weight classes.
Slocum was presented the Larry Perkinson Mental Attitude Award. He placed sixth in the CI meet and third in the sectional at 160 pounds. He qualified for the regional and finished with a 9-14 record.
Rodriguez received the Brandon Shehan Award as the team’s outstanding freshman who also displayed excellent sportsmanship and a strong work ethic. He went 0-1 at 138 pounds in varsity matches.
Anderson and junior Adam Behling were recognized for being chosen first-team Academic All-State. Smith was cited for his selection to honorable mention Academic All-State.
Smith, Anderson and senior Bradley Gutierrez were recognized as team captains. Gutierrez placed second in Conference Indiana, third in the sectional and third in the regional while posting a 17-8 record at 285 pounds.
Sixteen athletes were recognized as varsity letter winners – seniors Dallin Anderson, James Dwyer, Bradley Gutierrez and Morgan Smith; juniors Adam Behling, Nick Holt and Keandre Watson; sophomores Ashton Clark, Kamryn Denney and Keegan Hill; and freshmen Bryce Abner, Dylan Chavez, Hector De Dios, Connor Essick, Joshua Nelson and Jared Slocum II.
Others in the program were sophomores Caleb Dooley, Matthew Ellis and Zerek Greathouse; and freshmen Carlos Rodriguez and Sam Settle.
