Five Bull Dog wrestlers advance to semi-state

February 6, 2022 - Ten Columbus North wrestlers qualified for the Jeffersonville Regional tournament with top-four finishes at the Jennings County Sectional.  Five of those will continue to the Semi-state tournament in Evansville on February 12.  The Bull Dogs finished fourth as a team in the Regional with 71 points.

Justice Thornton (36-2) was the Dogs’ sole Regional champion at 126 pounds.  Thornton won his quarterfinal match with a 19-8 technical fall, and then cruised through the semifinals and finals with pins.

Liam Curfman (22-7) was the 106 pound Regional runner-up as he won his quarterfinal match with a pin, and his semifinal round with a major decision.  Curfman was then pinned in his championship match.

Jared Slocum (32-7) also finished second at 182 pounds with quarterfinal and semifinal pins before losing a 4-3 decision in the championship match.

Columbus North also advanced two fourth-place finishers.  Liam Phillips (21-14) won a decision in his quarterfinal match before losing the next two matches with decisions in his 152-pound weight class.

Keller DeSpain (14-14) finished in fourth place in the 170 pound class with a quarterfinal decision victory, followed by decision losses in the semifinals and finals.

Five additional Bull Dogs also competed at Regionals, but losses in their first-round matches ended their quests for a berth in the semi-state tournament.  These wrestlers included Bryce Hawkins (17-13) at 113 pounds, Jason Shuey (21-13) at 132 pounds, Josiah Green (17-20) at 145 pounds, Bryce Abner (18-8) at 195 pounds, and Alexander Lozano (12-15) at 220 pounds.

The semi-state championships will take place in Evansville next Saturday (February 12).
