BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Freshman Emalee Heafner delivered a two-out, two-run walk-off single on Thursday (May 23), lifting the Columbus North softball team to an 8-7 victory over Bloomington South in the semifinals of the Bloomington South Sectional.
Heafner finished with two hits and three RBIs as the Bull Dogs improved to 14-8 and earned a spot in the sectional final at 7 p.m. Friday (May 24) against Bloomington North, a 7-0 winner over Columbus East. Freshman Rachel Cowan and junior Sierra Norman also had two hits apiece for CN.
Columbus North battled from behind throughout the game to reach the title game. The host Panthers ended their season at 9-16.
Jessica Young and Lexie McGlothin hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the first inning to give Bloomington South a 3-0 lead, but Cowan countered with a solo shot in the bottom of the frame.
The Bull Dogs scored two unearned runs in the second to tie the game. Freshman Peri Foust singled, junior Brooke Bruin bunted and a throw to first was wild. That allowed Foust to score and Bruin to go to third base. Emalee Heafner then drove in Bruin with a single.
However, the Panthers scored four unearned runs in the fourth keyed by a two-run triple by Riley Saddlemire.
CN countered with three unearned runs of their own in the fifth. Sierra Norman singled, Cowan doubled and a walk to Bailey Lofton loaded the bases. Sophomore Meghan Waggoner singled home two runs, and Bruin followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home courtesy runner Carmen Rice.
The Bull Dogs had a chance to tie the game in the sixth, but Bloomington South escaped that jam. But in the seventh, the Panthers dropped a Lucy Norman popup that would have been the third out. A wild pitch advanced the runners and Heafner’s single up the middle followed, scoring pinch runner Angenzi Gonzalez and Lucy Norman to give the Bull Dogs the triumph.
Foust struck out seven batters in 3.1 innings to pick up the win in relief for Columbus North. Cowan fanned five while pitching the opening 3.2 innings.
Bloomington North improved to 8-10 as senior pitcher Deb Jones shut out the Olympians. Ragan Davis hit a three-run home run in the first inning to give the Cougars all the runs they would need. Cassie Hayes provided a sacrifice fly, Katy Alexander had a two-run triple and Davis added an RBI single for four insurance runs in the seventh.
