Columbus North baseball beats Plymouth 14-5, falls to McCutcheon 10-9 to complete regular season

LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Five walks, three hit batters and three errors allowed the Columbus North baseball team to score 10 times on no hits in the sixth inning Saturday afternoon (May 21), and the Bull Dogs went on to post a 14-5 victory over Plymouth in the final round of the McCutcheon Invitational.

Junior Wade Rankin went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBIs to pace a five-hit attack for the Bull Dogs, who went 2-1 over two days in the three-game event to complete their regular season at 16-10. Junior Korry Drum went 1-for-2 and senior Collin Lollar went 1-for-3 but each scored three times. Junior Logan Jones also added one hit.

Trailing 5-4 entering the bottom of the sixth, CN scored when senior Brice McDaniel drew a bases-loaded walk, senior Collin Lollar was hit by a pitch, Jones was hit by a pitch, Rankin drew a bases-loaded walk, junior Ben Thompson was hit by a pitch, a two-run error, a steal of home by pinch-runner Jeremias Dela Cruz and another two-run error.

Senior Caleb Mikesell, freshman Cam Dennie and junior Dyllon Pavey each had two hits for Plymouth (18-8).

Sophomore Jake Petrusky allowed five runs on eight hits while striking out five and walking two over six innings to move to 6-1 on the mound for the Bull Dogs. McDaniel relieved in the seventh, allowing one hit but notching the final three outs in his first pitching appearance of the season.

Earlier Saturday, Rankin went 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs and an RBI, but it was not enough as Columbus North fell 10-9 to host McCutcheon in the second round.

Junior Nolan Wetherald went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI, junior Cooper Trinkle went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs and senior Canaan Baum went 2-for-5 with an RBI for the Bull Dogs. Koby McNeely, Evan Allen and Miles Douglas each produced two hits for the Mavericks (14-12).

Columbus North used five runs in the sixth inning to overcome a 5-2 deficit, but McCutcheon rallied for five runs in the bottom of the innings for a 10-7 advantage heading to the seventh. CN tried to come back one last time, but two seventh-inning runs were not enough. Jones and Wetherald provided seventh-inning RBIs.

The Bull Dogs knocked off Crown Point 4-3 on Friday (May 20) with a three-run seventh-inning rally in the event’s opening round.

In other games in the event, McCutcheon beat Plymouth 10-0 on Friday and topped Crown Point 4-2 in 12 innings in the final game on Saturday night. Crown Point also beat Plymouth 6-1 on Saturday. McCutcheon won the event at 3-0. CN placed second at 2-1. Crown Point was third 1-2, and Plymouth was fourth at 0-3.

“I’ve been talking for the past couple of weeks to the guys,” CN coach Ben McDaniel said. “A handful of teams catch lightning in a bottle, and we have to see if we can make that us.

“We did not play well in this event last season, and that carried over into sectional. But this year, we battled all weekend and feel good about how we are leaving here. We’re back to playing Bull Dog baseball, and I am proud of our guys.”

The Columbus North freshman baseball team was to play a doubleheader at Greensburg on Saturday, but those games were canceled. The CN freshmen close their season at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday (May 24) at Southport.

The Bull Dogs’ varsity is back in action at 8 p.m. Wednesday (May 25) when it faces Shelbyville in the first round of sectional play at Bloomington North.
