BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Senior Brice McDaniel went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs on Wednesday evening (May 25), leading the Columbus North baseball team to a 12-1 victory over Shelbyville 12-1 in the first round of the Bloomington North Sectional.
Senior Collin Lollar and junior Cooper Trinkle also added two hits each for the Bull Dogs (17-10), who advanced to a semifinal game at 6 p.m. Friday (May 27) against Bloomington South (18-9). The Panthers defeated Bloomington North 5-3 winner in the other first-round game.
Columbus East and East Central will meet in the second semifinal game. Friday’s winners will square off for the sectional championship at 7 p.m. Monday (May 30).
McDaniel’s home run gave Columbus North a 2-0 lead in the first inning against Shelbyville, and the Bull Dogs added three runs in the third, three more in the sixth and four in the seventh to grab ahold of the contest.
Junior Korry Drum also homered and provided four RBIs for CN, while senior Canaan Baum and junior Wade Rankin each had a double. Sophomore Tyler Finke, back in action for the first time since an injury on April 29, and junior Nolan Wetherald also had singles for the Bull Dogs.
Lollar allowed just two hits and one run while striking out 12 and walking three in five innings pitched. Junior Logan Jones threw two innings in relief, yielding one hit while striking out one and walking one.
John Lux gave up eight runs on 10 hits to absorb the loss for Shelbyville. Logan Young doubled, and Tyce Taylor and Conner Hasecuster each had a single for the Golden Bears.
