Bull Dogs beat CAL and South Oldham in Super Prep Invitational, move to 5-1 in baseball

CRESTWOOD, Ky. – Junior Adam Chapman went 4-for-4 with a double and two RBIs on Saturday (April 7), keying the Columbus North baseball team to a 10-2 victory at South Oldham, Ky., in the Bull Dogs’ final game of the Super Prep Invitational.

Sophomore Blake Huffman went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs and junior Grant Trinkle was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs as the Bull Dogs went 2-0 for the day to improve to 3-1 in the two-day event and 5-1 for the season.

Sophomore Reese Harmon added a double, while junior Casper Clark and sophomores Austin Bode, Kyler McIntosh and Hayden McDaniel each had a single in a 13-hit attack. Senior Parker Maddox allowed one run on two hits while striking out five in five innings. Senior Konner Stahl pitched the final two innings, allowing one run one on hit.

The Bull Dogs scored three times in the fifth and seventh innings.

Trinkle opened the fifth inning with a triple and scored on a groundout by junior Homare Takauchi. Clark, McIntosh and McDaniel each singled to continue the inning and load the bases. Huffman then singled to drive home two runs.

In the seventh, Bode singled, senior Devon Rodgers was hit by a pitch and McDaniel walked to load the bases. Huffman doubled to center to bring two runs in, and Chapman singled home one more.

Columbus North took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Chapman singled in McDaniel, who was hit by a pitch and stole second. The Bull Dogs added two more runs in the third inning when Harmon came home on a wild pitch and Takauchi lofted a sacrifice fly to bring in Trinkle.

CN also scored once in the sixth when a Trinkle sacrifice fly drove home Harmon.

In the day’s opener, Trinkle tripled and Takauchi doubled him home in the first inning while McIntosh scored on a single by Huffman in the second inning as Columbus North edged Christian Academy of Louisville 2-1.

The host Centurions countered with a single run in the bottom of the second when Matthew Derridinger singled home Greg Lile. But neither CN freshman Zach Wager nor McIntosh allowed a run the rest of the way and the Bull Dogs held on for the decision. Together, the two pitchers combined to allow just four hits and McIntosh struck out five in five innings.

Takauchi went 2-for-4 with one RBI to lead the offense against CAL. Trinkle, Huffman, McDaniel, Bode and Harmon each added one hit.

At the JV level, Columbus North swept a doubleheader at Noblesville, winning 4-3 and 5-4 to improve to 4-0. In the first game, Freshman Alex McComb had one hit and two RBIs while freshman Will Baker struck out seven in five innings. In the second game, freshman Bryce Abner had three hits and two RBIs while sophomore Jacob Bailey struck out four on the mound.
